This visualization depicts the people mentioned by Bodley and his correspondents exported to the Open Source graphic design software Inkscape, which provides us with options to modify images that do not exist in Gephi. The nodes are in close proximity and the edges are indistinct, giving a ‘thick ribbon’ effect, rather than ‘fine edges’, which makes it difficult to perceive patterns or meaning. Despite the large network projection, the reader can still detect a cluster of interest; in the letters written between Bodley and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, one can clearly see that the people mentioned tend to have a connection with Scotland or Ireland. Contextual reference with the Diplomatic Correspondence reveals that Bodley was sending Essex intelligence from Scotland which he had obtained from the Scottish diplomatic representative Sir William Stewart (or ‘Coronel Stewart’ as Bodley called him), special ambassador to King James VI of Scotland. Essex, in turn, was sending Bodley information about various matters, including the capitulation of the rebels in Ireland.
