The letters of William Herle, intelligencer and diplomat for the Elizabethan court, offer a unique resource for Early Modern studies. Written over the period 1559-88, Herle's previously unedited, unpublished and overlooked letters are richly textured. They offer a fascinating insight into the information networks and patronage systems of the political administration, as well as valuable material for religious, social, economic and cultural history. Over 300 letters by and to Herle, scattered across various archives, were tracked down by CELL researcher Robyn Adams and became the subject of her doctoral study '"Both Diligent and Secret": The Intelligence Letters of William Herle' (University of London, 2004). Dr Adams has edited the letters with the support of CELL's technical team to produce a hypertext archive edition. The edition has been designed to maximise the ability to browse, search and retrieve information from the corpus. Edition 2 of the Letters of William Herle was released on 24th March 2006.
