Using material from the CELL web site

Citation:

The Modern Language Association [new window] and the Modern Humanities Research Association each provide handbooks which outline the procedures for citing electronic and web publicatons. Each CELL publication includes: (1.) the date of on-line publication, which should be cited in addition to the date on which it was accessed by the individual user; (2.) a unique reference number, which should be cited alongside the url of the CELL web site, http://www.livesandletters.ac.uk/, so that the paper can always be located on this site.

CELL reference numbers for e-prints:

To establish best practice it is imperative that each on-line publication is allotted a unique and meaningful reference number that can be cited by researchers. As the CELL publication archive expands, the referencing system will also enable the construction of a fully searchable catalogue. The reference number allocated to each publication consists of four elements:

  1. the project code (BAC = 'Francis Bacon Correspondence Project'; ERA = 'Erasmus Correspondence Project'; FOR = 'The Forum'; GUI = 'CELL Guides')
  2. year of on-line publication
  3. type of publication (01 = article; 02 = section from book or larger study; 03 = conference paper; 04 = position paper; 05 = report, description, or example)
  4. unique reference number

For example: our first on-line publication was Professor Lisa Jardine's paper on the Erasmus Correspondence, presented at the unFamiliar Letters conference (Centre for Editing Lives and Letters, July 2002) and available on-line with two appendices. This paper and its appendices have been allocated the following reference numbers: ERA/2002/03/001, ERA/2002/03/001.01, and ERA/2002/03/001.02. These are deciphered as follows:
