mr Hookes paper of enquirys to be made in Iceland was Read and it was
ordered that it should be entered and also Recommended by Coll. Tuke
to the Danish Lord that was Lately Embassador in England and gaue the
Society a Visit
mr. Hooke proposed an Expt. against next Day of shutting vp an animall &
a Candle together in a vessell to see whether they would Dye at the same
time or not.
28 Ianuary 1662/3. mr. Hooke made the Expt. of shutting vp in an oblong glasse a burning
Lamp & a chick & the Lamp went out wthin two minutes the chick Remaining
aliue & liuely enough. The same brought in an account of some tryalls for
finding of the pressure of the parts of water vpon one another and the Elastical
power of the air. It was read & orderd to be entred. mention being made
in this paper of a Diuing glasse seruing to giue a true account of the pressure
of ^ the water at the bottom of the sea against air, he was orderd to try it in Dr
godderd Long ^ /wooden/ tube. - mr. Hooke was orderd to haue a glasse made
that may serue insteed of a Bladder to make the expt. of Respiration
vizt how Long the same air will serue to breath in wthout any supply of
fresh air. The same is to try how long fishes will liue in the open air
and in a glasse full, and exhausted of air
Feb: 4. 1662/3. The Expt. of the force of falling bodys was tryed but the Instrument vsed for tht
purpose being defectiue mr Hooke the Curator of this Expt. was orderd to haue it better
fitted against next Day. and then to Repeat the Expt. -
29 The Expt. of Respiring the same air was made both in a glasse immersed in Cold water
and in a Bagg mr. Ball Respired in the glasse 30 times Dr. merret 36. mr Hooke 13
The Operator (Rich: Shortgraue) 56. but here the time was not obserued. Then the
same was tryed in a bagg. where mr. Hooke respired 19 times in 1 1/4 minute
Dr. merret 76 times in 3 minutes. It was orderd to be made againe the next
Day in a glasse immersed in warm water.
mr. zulichems Letter of feb: 3. 1662 was read and 2 expts. mentiond therein vizt. that of the mercury sticking to the
finger, and that of the not subsiding of water purged of /from/ air were recommended to be made againe
to Dr Godderd the former in a cane of a Lesser bore then formerly & to Mr Hooke the Later
mr. Hooke mentioning that the Refraction of Ice is Lesse then the Refraction of water
was desired to giue an account of tht Expt. in writing. -
Feb: 11. an Expt. of the Refraction of Ice was made by mr Hooke and an account of it by
30 him Giuen in writing which was Read & orderd to be entred. he was desired to try
it the next Day with a glasse of the same figure with the peice of Ice which he
vsed in the Expt. of this Day. .
The force of falling bodys was tryed againe and one once falling at the Distance of /Lesse then/
half an inch & somewt more than 1/4 of an inch moued 4 ounces. the same weight of one ounce
at the Distance of 3/4 of an inch moued 8 ounces. at the Distance of 1 1/4 - moued 16 ounces
at the Distance of 1 1/8 did the same at the Distance of 3 inches it moued 32 ounces at the Distance
of 4 inches it moued 64 ounces and at 3 inches & a little more did the same.
mr. Hooke was orderd to try this by himself at home as exactly as may be and bring
in a written account of it next Day.
Some liue coles & a chick were shut vp in a glasse the chick after it had been kept in
it 2 3/4 minutes was taken out aliue & well but the coles were extinguished aboute
a minute 'afore.           Dr. Pope was orderd to Recommend to Dr. wren from the
society the continuance of the obseruations of the Eclipses of s satellites and himself together wth. himself
[M]r Ball & mr Hook & were Desired to joyne in the same work.
