Dec. 31. 1662. mr Hook made again the Expt of weighing and ascending & Descending bodys in water but another way
the written account of all he was Desired to bring in the next Day.
mr. Hooke proposed the following Expt. to be made the next meeting. vizt, to shew the Difference in the refraction of warm
water and cold and to the Difference in the weight of warm water & cold 3ly. the Liuing of Insects in Condensed air
To which he added a suggestion concerning the Rectifying of chimneys or the ways of ordering the Combustible mate
rialls soe as that wth. a smaller consumption of the fuell a greater heat may be Giuen then is done by the
common ways yet in vse.
Ianuary. 7. 1662/3. mr. Hooke made 2 of the Expts. proposd by him the Last precedent meeting vt. that of the Dif
ference of the weight of cold & warm water and that of the Difference of Refraction in warm & cold
water. which Later he was orderd to Repeat the next meeting when also he is to make the Expt. of the Liuing of
Insects in Condensed air. and to bring in an account of all in writing. The same also gaue in
his account of some tryalls for finding how much the pressure of water is increased by the Descent
of heauier or ascent of lighter bodys therein the Reading whereof was Deferred till next Day
he was also /likewise/ orderd to shew the society the way of making wth. a Lamp coloured glasse out of white glasse
mr. Hook proposed 2 other expts. against next Day vizt. 1 of the force of Descending bodys from Different heights
2 of compressing air by quicksiluer. he also desired againe that those that were acquainted with the ways of
ordering fuell to the best aduantage might bring in an account thereof to the End that vpon the consi
deration of what hath been done hitherto in this matter, It may be further thought vpon
how it may be Improued. wherevpon seuerall members of the Society suggested wt
came into their minds. Mr. Howard mentiond a way of Roasting in a very short time, wth
basting the meat wth. flames of Lard powred vpon it: Dr. wilkins of boyling & stewing
meat wth. Lamps. mr. Hoskins of Roasting many peices of meat with a fiery globe of plated
Iron standing in the middle. Sr. Cyrill wyche of keeping water & other things warme
in a Double pot separated by an interstice. Sr. R moray & Dr Godderd by brewing beer
in a kettle hauing only a brasse bottom, and in the middle thereof a globe of brasse open
at the Lower end into which the fire goeth whereby the brasse for the Rest of the
kettle is Saued. mr. Ball mentiond the way of Boyling water in a hogs head by a
copper globe wth. a neck put in a furnace heated wth seacole.
14. 1662/3. mr. Hookes two papers were read the one conteining an account of some tryalls
for finding how much the pressure of water is Increased by the Descent of heauier or
the ascent of lighter. bodys. therein. The other conteining an Expt. concerning the Differing
weight of /2/ warm & cold water both were orderd to be entred.
mr. Hooke made the Expt. of condensing air by the pressure of water but the tryall not agreeing wth
the hypothesis It was orderd to by repeated next Day
Dr merret suggested an expt. of keeping two weather glasses one in a cellar the other abroad to see whether
it be colder in cellars in winter then in summer. he was Desired to make his tryall. Mr Hooke furnishing
him wth weather glasses. (q Zucchius) upon some Discourses about balls for firing mr. Hooke was -
desired to consider of the seuerall ways of ordering fuell that haue been suggested
in order to make improuemt. thereof
mr. Stanhope mr Hoskins /&/ mr Hooke were desired to draw vp some enquirys concerning the said
particular of Loading shipps in Greenland in order to be sent wth the next fleet going thi=
ther.          mr. Hooke would bring in the following Expts. next Day.
/of/ the Liuing of insects in condensed air 2 of the force of falling bodys 3 of Re=
spiration 4 of the Differing Refractions in Cold & warm water.
.21. mr. Hooke made an expt. of condensing air by water whereof he was orderd to bring in a
. . . written account against next day. (the Precident did suggest that it was to be considerd in
this Expt. whether the compression of air was made by the weight of the water only or
whether the coldnesse thereof did also contribute to it, the same would haue - it tryed ^ /whether the compression/ in the same
Expt. whether holds exactly by 20 40 60. 80. or not) Mr. Hooke shewed the scheme of
an Instrument for making the expt. of the force of falling bodys; orderd to be made next Day
mr. Hooke made tryall wth. a bladder how Long the same air would serue for Respiration with
out the supply of fresh air, and he found it serue for 5 Inspirations but though with Diffi
culty He was ordered to try it againe but wth a glasse & to bring in the account thereof in writi[ng]
