ble. though there appeared some compression in the water by its spirting out when the
Ball was Bored through. mr. Hooke mentiond that he had an other way of com
pressing water which he was orderd to prepare for the next meeting][Mr. Boyle of Compr water]
mr. Hooke affirmed that water in a tryall of his would not compresse sensibly wth that force
which would compresse the air into the 11th. or 12th part. An account in writing was brought
in by mr H. of 2 expt. tryd before the S at their precedent meeting. 1st. of the rising of water
in a bolt head vpon immersion in cold. & falling vpon the immersion of it in hot water
2ly. of the stretching & shrinking of glasse vpon heating & cooling. both were orderd
to be registred. Sr. R moray mr Slingsby by Dr Godderd & mr Hooke were appointed Curators
for the weighing all sorts of Bodys. [wallis of ^ /3 ms./ Vleg Beg) Horox) to Heuelius.) wind to speak
to Ionas more about Horrox papers & tables) There was made an obseruation concerning the
weight of Lead to that of water, whereof mr H was orderd to bring in an account the

mention was made by mr. Hooke that a way might be considerd of petrifying wood
Item for softening wood for easy caruing & then to harden it againe. Item of hard
ning wood & making it Lasting by boyling in tarr, the Discourse of these particulars were
referred to the next meeting.
Aprill 20: 1664. [Breaking wood expts.] mr. Hooke shewd the expt. of compressing spt of wine
by a small glasse pipe in the manner of a spring which did soe far succeed as that
there was a sensible compression of the spt. he was orderd to try it next day with
common water tinged. [Boyles tadpole] Is: vossius admitted] salt wth. Blebs) wild softning steel)
Birkenshaws proposalls) wood distinguisht from yogh yeugh trees) charlton anatomy.) tadpoles
Expts. for next Day. 1 the magdeburg Expt. 2 compresse tinged water. 3 boyle wood in tarr. 4 ascent of
water in syphons. 5 breaking wood.
Aprill. 27. The magdeburg Expt. wth 2 glasse bottles ioyned together by a stopcock whereof
the lower was filld with water the other had nothing but common air in it was tryd by ap
plying it to the Pnewmatick Engine. and exhuasting the air out of the vper bottle
wherevpon the water in the lower Bottle the stop cock being opend spouted vp into the
vpper bottle abundance of Bubbles also after it Rising into the same. orderd that
the same Expt. be repeated the next Day in other positions of the glasse soe tht the water
be aboue & the air below both to be brought in writing by mr. Hooke
The expt. of compressing water tinged was tryed and it succeeded. though but to a very small
degree of compression. mr. H to giue an account of it in writing (le febres book -
volatlied salt of tartar wth vinegar 2 years). Birkenshaws proposall read) comittee appointed)
mr. Hooke - was put in mind of making the Expt. wth a Bird in compresst air after another
manner at the next meeting (Gyant child) may dew) warts cured by washing in may dew) seuerall

may the 4. 1664 The magdeburg Expt. was tryed againe in another position wth. successe orderd to be
tryd the 2d time at the next meeting by exhausting the air out of the vper glasse; and afterwards
out of the water in the vndermost glasse. Orderd the expts. of Aurum fulminans in steel balls be
prosecuted & tht mr. Hooke prouide Balls fit for that purpose. mr. Hooke to prepare some puluis
fulminans against next day of sulphur salt peter & salt of tartar as a succedanuem to
Aurum fulminans. (Dr. Goddard of Aur. Ful.) Sr. W Petty. breaking wood) Sr. R moray of the King weighing 3ll lighter

the vpermost glasse and afterwards out of the water it self wherevpon the Glasse wth the water
