march. 30. 1664. Heuelius chosen, monster.] mr. Hooke was desired to draw the
picture of it according to Dr. Charltons direction.
mr. Hooke gaue an account of the expt of compressing the air to a quarter wth a little
Bird in the engine which hauing continued therein from 11 in the morn to 10 at night
somewt. panting was then taken out and grew liuely enough. yet sickned next day but
was soon well againe. and remaineth aliue at this Day. orderd that because in the
former Expt of this kind the Bird dyed & the cause thereof was by some suspected
to be the smell of the cement tryall be made whether it be soe or not by putting
one bird into a glasse wth comon air closed wth clay & another into the com-
pressing engine with common air likewise but closd wth cement to see which
of these two birds will doe best & liue longest. [Boyles book of colour.

the Expt. to proue that glasses will stretch. an expt. was made in a Bolthead
wth. a long small stem filled wth cold water & then putt into warm water, where
vpon, it sunk to half an Inch. whereas els it might riseth by warmth. the cause of this
sinking was by some ascribed to the stretching of the glasse by the warmth to be

April the 6. 1664. An account was giuen by mr. Hooke of two Birds that were put
one into a glasse with common air closed wth clay the other into the compressing
engine wth. common air likewise but closed with cement. vizt that the Bird
in the glasse after it had been kept there 8 howres remaind howrs remaind
aliue and pretty well, But the other Bird closed vp wth cement dyed wthin the same
time. It was desired that a way might be thought of to Remedy that smell
which seemd to be the cause of the Birds dying in the condensing engine.
The expt. of compressing water in a copper Ball was repeated But succeeded not, the vessel
Leaking againe vpon knocking. orderd tht the operator prouide against next day a Lead
=en ball holding about two quarts and consisting of 2 hemispheres cast thick &
well planished.
The expt. of stretching glasse was made by mr. Hooke who was desired to giue the
way & successe thereof in writing. the expt of making cold common water put in
a bolt head wth. a small stem, subside wth. warm water & rise wth cold was repeat
=ed, and mr. Hooke was desired to bring the same in writing. [elms from chips & bows

Aprill the 13th. 1664 The expt. of compressing water in a Leaden ball was tryed by weigh
in the Leaden Ball filld full wth. water, /in water &/ then taking it out & knocking Dints into it and
then weighing it againe in Water to see whether it weighed any thing more then it
