was turned vpermost and the cock opend the air Remaining in the other glasse ascended
briskly into the water in gleat flakes the water Descending with much more celerity than
it Did afterwards when the air was Let in again. to know the Difference at the time
whereof it was orderd that the operator should prepare the expt. againe for the next day
to measure the time of the waters falling down into the other glasse full wth common air
And that of its falling into the exhausted glasse.
The expt. of condensing air in a small glasse wth a sucker was tryed & suceeded well
the air being thereby compressed into the 6th. part of the Rome it filld before. -
orderd that at the next meeting a Bird & a mouse be tryed in this Instrument:
mr. H. proposed an Expt to shew in what figure the glasse drops are Broken by dipping
them in Ising glasse & wrapping them in some Leather tyed about wth threed he
was orderd to make this Expt. the next Day. A Description of this expt. and a Discourse
vpon it and some other phaenomena of Glasse drops made by the same was read
for which the Authour Receiued the thanks of the society. who was also desired to
shew them the following Expt. by him mentiond in the said Discourse. vizt. take
a glasse cane about a foot Long, seal vp one end, then put in a very small glasse bottle
almost of the shape of an essence violl with the open mouth towards the seald end
then draw out the other end of the pipe very small & fitt the whole Cylinder wth
water. then set this tube by the fire till the water begin to boyle & the air in the
bubble be in good part Rarifyd & driuen out then by sucking at the small pipe
more of the air & vapours in the Bubble may be sucket out soe that it may sink
to the botton, when tis sunk to the bottom, in the flame of a candle or Lamp nipp vp
the end & let it cool. wherevpon tis obvious to obserue 1st. that the water will by de
grees subside & shrink into Lesse Room, next that the air or vapours in the glasse
will expand themselues soe, as to bu/o/y vp the Little glasse. 3ly. that all about the In
side of the glasse pipe, there will appear an infinte number of small bubbles which
as the water grows colder & colder, will swell bigger & bigger and many of them buoy
vp themselues vp and break at the top. [orderd that the Pt. sr Ro: moray. Sr. P neil. S W Petty
Dr. wilkins. Dr. Godderd. mr Henshaw mr Hill mr Oldenburg mr Hooke be a committe to see the expt
of Diuing with the Leaden box & pipe on tuesday next in the afternoon, meeting in
Sr. R morays chamber & tht the Operr. appoint the Diuer, and make the Instrument ready
for that time [Beale about transplanting East india spices to the west recomended to mr Pouey.
The expt. of heating common and fulminating powder in steel balls referrd to next Day mr Hook
to prouide fuliminating powder. [about may dew]
May. 18. 1664. The expt. concerning the force of comon gunpowder was tryed by
putting about a small thin thimble full of such powder into a thick Cylindricall
peice of steel hauing a little cauity in the middle and closed with an exact
Screw which being heated in a coal fire burst in two places. throwing out
the screw it was orderd the expt. should be repeated the next Day in as
strong a peice of steel as could be well made, and wth as much care of
preventing any vent as might be mr. Hooke appointed Curator hereof.-

a mouse & also that a Bird be putt into the same vessell with out condensing
the air to see how shee will Liue in the Common air. orderd that a carps bladder
be prouided against next Day.
