obseruation of a long leggd spider hauing two eyes fixed on its back and standing out vpon
a stem. The operator produced some Raine water wth store of Little insects in it. mr Hook
was orderd to Look vpon them wth.in a microscope and to draw the picture of them [mr Henshaw
found some turne to gnats in his study] Gunpowder. fulminans.
mr Hook shewed the figure of an engine for determining the force of Powder by weight
he was desired to Draw it in great & to adde some explication to it
mr Zulichems Expt. was tryd againe and suceeded the water that was well purged of air Remai
ning suspended in a cane of neer 7 foot after the engine was very well exhausted.
It was orderd to be tryd againe & mr Hooke was desired to continue the application
of a sucker to it, as also to take exact notice of all circumstances of the occuring
in this Expt and to giue all in writing.
Aug. 26. mr Hooke was orderd to make obseruations both vpon the Insects of the Rain water
and the Barnet water, to draw schemes of them, to see whether they will change into other
kinds and to wt bignesse they will grow.
The same produced his explications of the new sounding instruments and of the vessell that
fetcheth water from the bottom of the sea. Item of the engine that is to determine the
force of Gunpowder by weight, he was desired to draw the figures in great against
the next Day for the better satisfaction of the company.
The same produced a scheme of the pleyades as he had Lately obserued them mingled wth
other starrs. among which he had Discouered ten kinds of magnitudes below the fifth
he Represented in this Scheme aboue 80 starrs whereas Gassendus has set down but 35.
neer the said Pleyades. he was desired to continue these obseruations, and particularly to
make some of the sheath of Orion . the triangular starrs &c. [Ludolphus.
Expts. for next Day were appointed vizt. 1 of the mouse in the compressing engine. 2 the prose

Sep. 2 mor. Hugens expt. was prosecuted by the application of a sucker but was brough to noe

Dr. wilkins put the company in mind to improue their former consideration of making a
history of the weather in order to build therevpon an art of prognosticating the changes
thereof and he suggested /that/ to some of the members of the society it might be recommen

ther in order whervnto mr Hooke was desired to engage herein which he did &
Dr. wilkins vndertook to Recommend the same to Dr Power It was also thought fit
that Dr. wren should be written to send to the society a scheme of his weather engine
formerly proposed to see whether it needed any addition or not. Sr Ken: Digby related that
Dr. Dee by a diligent obseruation of the weather for 7 years together acquired such a
prognosticating skill of weather that he was therefore counted a witch.
[monr. Huygens new fashiond candle stick.] mr Hooke produced a microscopicall Obsre. .
of a worm bred in rain water and turned to a gnat./
Sep. 9. mr Hugens expt was prosecuted wth a sucker applyed to a glasse cane but the water would
not Leaue the top vpon the suction. the President was desired to make this Experiments wth mer-
cury by himself and to inform the company of the successe thereof which he vndertook to doe.
The President & mr Boyle were desired to consider of the odde phaenomenon in monr
hugens Expt. for the finding of a solution thereof. -
mr. Boyle propounded the Obseruation of the standerd. also a seald thermometer in a celler Vz
mr Hook brought in a scheme of the Instrument for the Determining the force of gunpowder
by weight together with the explication thereof which was orderd to be enterd.
The same produced a microscopicall obseruation of the seuerall parts of a fly.
Sep. 16. [vpon a suggestion of Dr. wilkins debated &c] It was orderd that the expt. should be first
tryed wth a peice of skin cutt off from the body of a dog and sowed on againe vpon the same
Dog & Dr. crone & mr Hook were appointed curators thereof and the operator commanded to pro
uide a dog against next day wensday. mr Hook was desired to try the growing of hair
of a cocks spur on the head of a cock . -
the operator was orderd to haue ready against the next day a cylinder of to be kept in
the colledge for obseruing the ascent and descent thereof according to the various constitutions
of the air. Dr. crone mentiond that he had found it Rise & fall according to the degrees of
cold & heat but wthsome air left in the cane. mr Hook alledging that mr Boyles cylinder
had Risen in summer & fallen in winter and ascribing this effect to the greater quantity of vapours
exhaled in summer causing more grauitation in the air [Dr. wrens weather scheme left wth mr Boyle
