Octob: 7. 1663. there was put a mouse into the Compressing engine & though 4 times as much air
was forced into it as was in it yet the animall appeard not to haue receiue any alteration thereby
my Ld Brounker acquainted the Company wth. the successe of monr. Zulichems Expt. made by him
wth. mercury. vizt that vpon the exhausting of the air the quicksiluer had stood 34 inches high
and that he had obserued that it neuer fell but when a bubble broke, and that when it fell
and broke it fell at once soe low as it would fall by three suctions vpon which he was of
opinion that noe account could be giuen of this phaenomenon from the equiponderancy
of the air, and consequently the standerd of the mercury being about 29 inches the
rest must be from some other cause.
mr Boyle did second this Relation affirming to haue made the like expt. and found the
quicksiluer to stand at aboue 50 inches and acknowledging that something Els must
be taken in to explicate this odde phaenomenon. my Ld Bro: & mr Boyle were both
Desired to prosecute and consider further this expt. and to giue both the matter of fact
and their thoughts of the cause thereof in writing.
mr. Hookes paper concerning the Obseruables for the making a history of the weather
was Read and orderd to be received by the President & sr. R moray. and then to be
registred and sent to the seuerall persons that haue been engaged in this work of Ob
seruing the changes of weather as Dr. Power mr Beale &c.

a wild oate with an index. [Dr Goddards Gutt string][Dr. Godd. obser of standerd. not heat or cold Dry wett
but thick & cleer air made low or high stand.]
Oct. 14. The Expt of making the stand aboue its vsuall station was further inquired
into &. mr Boyle affirmed that to haue tryed it againe and kept it suspended to
the height of 52 inches wth. water. it was againe Recommended to his further
prosecution.
Dr. crone & mr Hook hauing not yet met to cut a peice of a Doggs skin and sow it on
againe to see whether it will grow & Dr. charlton affirming to haue tryed this Expt
formerly he was desired to meet on fryday next with the other curators at Gresham Coll
and there to make the Expt. together.
mr Hook was desired to Lodg some Dayes in Gresham Colledge for the well fitting the
compressing engine and the giuing order to the operator for the making the Engine

that they could not stretch it out soe farr as to couer the whole flesh with it as it
had done before but yet it looked as if it would grow on againe. the whole processe
was orderd to be giuen in writing by mr Hooke
