the vice prest. Sr. Ionas more tooke the chair
Sr. Theodore De Vaux Presented two bookes Sent by the -
Grand Duke to the President & secretary of the society by
the Hands of Signr. Terere that Prince's Resident here, they were
two Exemplars of Stephano Lorenzinj's Obseruationi intorno
alle torpeinj, printed at Florence 1678. These were recomme
ded to Sr. Iohn Hoskins & mr Hooke to giue be pervsed by them and
they were Desired to giue some account of their contents at the
next meeting. In the mean time the society Desired Sr. Theodore
Deuaux to Returne the Societys acknowlegments to The Prince
by Signor Terere who was thanked also for his care.
mr. Hunt was orderd to get that hadsomely bound which was pre
sented to the Society president. the other was left to the Disposall of
mr Hooke.
mr. Pouey inquired of mr Flamstead concerning the heat of greenwich
Hill. who said it was temperate, whence was occasiond some Discourse
concerning the heating of the Air by the beames of the sun either Direct
or reflected, and it was argued that the heat of the earth was one of
the greatest cause of warming the air /stagnant/ neer the surface, whereas the air
at the tops of hills being much in motion & further remoued from the
surface of the earth was not soe much heated.
mr. Hooke gaue an account of his perusing Piso about the. Coco nuts and rela
ted that piso this author Affirmes the young coconut to be full of a plea
sant milky juice but that when it is fully ripe is dryed away and /there is/ only a
hollow kernell Left wth.in the hard coco shell - vpon this occasion
mention being made of the Indians climbing those palm trees mr
Hooke Described the way how they did it by the vse of two /short/ ropes
the one fastned to their feet the other to their Armes by the
help of wch. they could climb to the top of the streightest smoothest
& highest trees.
vpon mentioning the Russia apple that was transparent mr. Hill affirmed that
there is in England such an apple Calld the cucumber apple which is some
what transparent in seuerall of its parts or cells.
mr Pouey vpon the Discourse of the Coco wine affirmed that there was noe sweet
juice But it would turne to the sourest vineger, and accordingly soe would
the palm tree wine
vpon Reading the Relation of ^ /the way of tanning/ the Russia Leather mr Pouey Proposed that mr
Charles Howards Expt. of Tanning might be tryed by the society and that he was
willing to comunicate it to the society, and he vndertooke to procure the way
and to bring it in.
mr Hill affirmed that all the Russia Leather brought into England was made of Elk hides
