Therevpon a further Discourse was occasiond concerning the curious colour and the
Lasting smell of Russia & Turkey Leather and further inquiry concerning the
materiall wherewth. it was tanned. And mr. Pouey mentiond that the cutting
of Russia Leather being Lye Layed in a chest ^ /among clothes/ was an infallible way of preseruing
all wthin it from mothes.
Sr. Theodore De vaux obserued that the Lying on those skins was very good
for such as were troubled wth the stones. others affirmed that the Lying
on other Leather would haue much the same effect.
Sr. Ionas more Related that mr. Flamstead had formerly giuen him a Descriptio
of the way & processe of making Derby malt, and promised to look it out &
Bring it into the Society. He also added that they had a way at darby of cooling their
ale very quickly soe as it blinketh it soe as they call it that it grows cleer & fit to drink presently
Seuerall ways were mentiond of the clarifying of Ale. the worst of the
ale wiues by a chanber pot into it. another of a pewter Dish And another
wth. a green oaken bow.
mr. Pouey sayd there was a way of making a very strong & very pale ale wth
wheaten malt. others that the same thing might be done wth comon malt
by putting whole wheat into the Ale.
Dr. Gale said there was a way of making ^ /molberry ale or groot/ ale presently work, clarify, and be fit
for Drinking by putting into it a kind of Leauen made of the yeast ^ /of an empty cask/ dryed
& made vp into a ball. But that was not approued to be soe pleasant
or soe wholesome -
mr. Pouey Promised to bring in a Receipt of making a very plea
sant wholesome & strong ale and as good as any -
Hereupon Sr. Theodore De vaux promised to bring in a dozen Receipts
which had been experimented by Sr. Theodore mayerne for making ales
of seuerall sorts. -
This occasiond Discourse about various ways of making wines & other --
pleasant & wholesome Drinkes of other sorts - &
Sr. Theodore Deuaux promised to bring in the Receipts of making Diuers
of them. As wth. Currans Water & suger, & wth Raisins & water. mr Pouey Rela
ted that my Lord of northumberland had made much vse of this last wine
That a 'stiller at fox Hall Did make spirits wth such wine. others affirmed
that It was vsed also by seuerall other 'stillers
Herevpon much Discourse was occasiond about making wine wth cherrys only
of which we haue soe great plenty now in kent & seuerall other parts of
England and it was wished that that Designe might be promoted for that
It would much saue the expense of forreine wines and much improue
our own Countrey.-
mr Euelyn affirmed that he had made some wth Cherrys that did keep very
well two years. As also that he had made an excellent Drink of Quin
ces.
Sr. Theodore Deuaux mentiond a way of Renewing & Refreshing palld
& Decayd wines by putting Raysins into it. mr. Hooke sayd that he knew /formerly/
a merchant who did formerly make much vse of the juice of our Grapes to Renew his wines
