[fol. 78r] A ^o^ D ^I^ 1212.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Henry. Tiresia.] Henrie, the son of William, Baron of Janvill, brother to Godfrey of Bullyon, cam into Spaine, to ayd Alphonse,surnamed the brave, king of Castile, against the Moores, called the Merimolyns, behaving him self so valiantly, as the said kyng gave unto him, his natural daughter Tyresia, to wife. and with hir in dowrie, the Contrie of Portingal in title of an Erlldom. That famos battell was fought, uppon the day of the holly Crosse, A ^o^ 1212. And theruppon the order of St James first founded, under the ensigne of a bloody sword, and the armes of the gollden Castle, in the red feilde, therwith tooke their beginning, which ar now given by the kinge of Castile.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Alfons] Henrie had yssew Alphonse, who combating at Orico, against 5. pagan kings, was chosen and proclaymed kyng, before the battell by his armie, and defeating his adversaries, tooke for his armes, the 5. schochions in on feilde, that the kings of Portingal give at this day.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Sanchio Alfons] Sanxy, or Sanchio succeded Alphonse, called the lover of the people, who conquered of the moores, the Cittie sylurs in Algarbes.

Alphonse the fatt, who wan from the Moores, the Town of Alcassar & sondry others, succeded his father, & had twoe sons by his wife Urraca, Princess of Castile, and daughter of Alphonse the 9 ^th^ .

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Sanchio died s.p. Alfons] The eldest was Sanchio called Capella, who succeded, but by his own simplicity, & the audatiousnes of his wife, (then governing) named Mentia Lopes de Haia, daughter to the Erlle of Biskay: he was deprived, dying, without yssew, and the kyngdom invested by election of the people, in the second brother called Alphonse the third.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Erle. of Dapinarty. Contess of bolloin 2 Alfonss Mathilda] Alphonse, in his yong yeares being in Fraunce, maryed Mathilda, the eldest daughter of Reynalld, Erlle of Dampmartyn, and the Lady Eede, Countess of Bulleyn, and had yssew by hir twoe sons Peter & Robert.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): peter Robert. from [he ac] Cathar. of france.] Peter dyed yong, & Robert survived, of whose race, grew the familie de la Fowr, whence the Quene mother of Fraunce, deryves her feeble title & old pretention, to the Croun of Portingal, the said Crown by the Law (Mentale) being exempted, from the female lynes.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Deniss Alfonss] The said Alphonse, leaving his wife Mathilda, in Fraunce, was called to the kyngdom of Portingal, and matched him self, (notwithstanding his first wife alive) with Beatrice, the natural daughter of Alphonse, kyng of Castile & Leon, having in dowrie with hir, the Erlldom of Algarbis, which the kynge of Portingal, have since intituled a kyngdome having yssew by the said Beatrice .4. children Denys, Alphonse, Blainche & Constance.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Deniss.] Denys, succeded his father Alphonse, & instituted the order of the knightes of Jesus, in his tyme, sub ordine Cistertiensi, wherof the king is master. and hath annexed to yt, all the out Iles, of the new Conquests, with other great Revennues, aswell in Brasill & the east Indies, as elswhear throughout his dominions.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Alfonss 1295] Alphonse the 4 ^th^ began his raigne in Portingal, after his fathers decesse about the yeare of 1295.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Peter.] Peter son to Alphonse succeded him & had yssew Ferdinand.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Ferdinand. Jhon a bastard becam k. Jhon k of Castile. a bastard] Ferdynand dyed without yssew masculine, leaving behind him a daughter, of an adulterows marraige, who was maryed to John king of Castile, son to Henrie of leon the bastard, overcom by the blacke Prince of wales at which John [fol. 79r] which John was defeated, at the memorable battell of Giberoth, by the helpe of the Englishe, pretending the Conquest of Portingal in the right of his wife.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): [perlio] Jhon elected k. philippa second dorghter to Jhon of Gaunt ] John the first natural son of Peter, a personaige of great & singular vallew, was elected by the people to be their king, who matched with Phillip the second daughter of John, duke of Lancaster, & of Constance of Aragon, sole heire to Peter of Aragon, which John had the honor of the battell at Giberoth.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Eduard Jhon] He had Edward & John, by the said Phillip his Spowse.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Alfons ferdinan.] Of Edward cam Alphonse, Ferdinand, & Leonora, which Leonora, was marryed to the Emperour Frederick the third, father to Maximilian the Emperour.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Emanuell. marryed 2. sestar.] Alphonse the v ^th^ was he of whom Comineus reportes, how notably he was abused in Fraunce, in Lewis the 11 ^th^ his tyme, which Alphonse had yssew John the second that dyed without yssew masculine.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): he had .7. sons and 2. doughters by his second wiff] Emanuel, son to Ferdinand brother of Alphonse the v ^th^ & of Beatrice, daughter to the second son of John the first, was admitted to the kyngdom, aswell by election of the people, as by title of his own right who maried three wyves.

The first was Isabel, daughter to Ferdinand, king of Castile & Aragon, of whom he had Michael de Paz, whose mother dyed in the birthe, & he within few yeares after.

The second Mary, sister of his first wife, who brought him forth 7. sons & twoe daughters.

The eldest daughter Isabel, was married to Charles, the v ^th^ who had yssew by hir Phillip now king of Spaine, mary the Empresse dowager, & Johan, marryed to John the infant, father to king Zebastian, slayn in Barbary.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): charles phil. Emanuel philibert charles Margaret. fra. francis philibert Isabel. [2ll] francis. philibert. R. Hispa.] The second daughter Beatrice, given in marraige to Charles Phillibert duke of Savoy, grandfather to this present Duke of Savoy, the supposed son of Emanuel Phillibert & of his wife the daughter of Frauncis, french king the first.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Jhon the 3. ] The eldest son to Emanuel was John the third, who matched with Katheryne, daughter to Prince Phillip of Austria, father to Charles the v ^th^ of whom he had fowr sons, & on daughter Charles, Phillip. Anthony (who dyed in the Cradell) & John who survived the rest, & was marryed to Johan, the second daughter of Charles the v ^th^ mother to the king Zebastian before mencioned.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Philip k. Mary charles killed] Mary daughter to John the third, was married to Phillip now king of Spaine, under certaine conditions, that the masculine lyne fayling, his second son by hir, being brought up in Portingal, & therby naturallyzed in their lawes & languaige, shold be king. But Phillip having only Charles by hir, who dyed violently, as is affirmed constantly, by comaundment of his father, in whom that lyne was determined.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Lewis. 2. son to Emanuell Antony elected k./ ] Lewis second son to king Emanuel, promoted to be duke of Begar: highe Constable of Portingal, Livetenant of the Confines of the Kyngdom, called (Frontero mayo) and master of this horse, to the order of the Roodes in Portingal.

He marryed privatly and advowedly a verteous gentlewoeman, called Violante, of whom he had Don Antonio, chosen by the people, & allowed by his right, to be king of Portingal, in these latter yeares.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Ferdinand .3. son of K. Emanuell] Ferdynand: third son to Emanuel, was matched with the daughter & heir of the Erlle of Marialva, whose Children dying yong they instituted by testament Don Antonio to be heir aswell to their patrimaoniall as movable goodes.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Alfonss 4. son of Emanuell] Alphonse the 4 ^th^ son was Cardinal of St John & St Paule Bishop of Lysbone & Ebone.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Harry the .5. son] Harrie the 5 ^th^ son allso a Cardinal of the 4. holly [duccates] , laget & latere, and Inquisitor generall in those partes, was elected by the people king, after the dollorous successe of Sebastians battell in Barbary. Don Antonio being reputed then dead.

[ Marginalia (by Burghley): Edward the 6. son] The 6 ^th^ son of Emanuel was Edward marryed the daughter of James Duke of Bragantia, having had by hir on son & twoe daughters. the son dying in his cheifest spring about xxvj yeares of aige. unmaryed.

The eldest daughter was married to Alexander Hernesius now Prince of Parma, whose son & haire is Ranutius.

The second daughter of Edward, marryed to hir unckle, son to James Duke of Bragantia, of whom there be sondrie Children, but the parents weare brought into Spaine by intisment uppon k. Phillips usurpacon of Portingal. And there the said poore Duke dyed either of melancoly or poyson, or of both, as the fame is./

The 7 ^th^ son of kyng Emanuel was Anthony who dyed unmarryed.
