[fol. 164r] My verie good L I most hartily thank you for your long lres which I received by Sir Thomas Shurley, and for your frendly consideracon of the contynuall hindrancs I have for writing with mine owne hand: which at this present are most extreme, by reason of the infinite care and buisynes I have abowt setting forth of the Armie towards the releef of Berk, which is presently beseiged by th'enemy. for which cawse I am faine to referre all things to the report of Master Herle, especially touching the matter of Embden, which is the principall thing I had to certifie your L. of, wherin he can thorowly advertise you what is doon ^being Imployed there for her majesty^ and what difficultie I had to bring the States ^to a good end^ . Thus for this time I comitt your L. to the happie protecion of the most highe. From Utrecht this viij ^th^ of August. 1586 Your L. verie assured frend R Leycester
[Postscript:] My L. the matters of this state doth grow now to be of great Importaunce and of such consultation as ther ys no further dalyaunce to be used, and her majesty shall shortly be advertysed of the hole as farr as we her mynysters ar able to look into yt. The people are most affectionate to her majesty & desire only to be hirs, The hier sort that manage the causes amonge them, and who wyll at length perswade the people, wyll I se deall uppon a surer ground then hetherto they have done or ells yow wyll fynd they wyll seke an other course. I may boldly say uppon my conscience that they as well as ther comon sort wold begge of god none other to be ther prince or to be protected by, than her majesty. but the fear & dowbt that heretofore for these v months past tyll now that master wylks [cam] they have had, hath caused many & great [Inconvenyences] to happen to this state, and how ^^ [signed] all my pore servyce & Indeavors here your L. cannott I suppose but conceave. but by adventuer was for god & her majesty & my end shall wyttnes yt. for your L. doth best know & all [may] have Indyfferent can [Iuge] what my care & paynes hath byn to kepe things safe & upright, meting with so many crosses & thwarts as I have donne from my first coming tyll this day.
