[fol. 69v] 27 April 1571 From Herle to the Bish. of Rosse.

I thanck your L: for your answere, which hath much releeved me, but I have not beene face to face with Charles nor out of this chamber since I was comitted for they observe me streightly & deale with great rudenes with me, having this morninge beside my Irons I had a payer of shackells added so as I can scarse move, And for this speech of my beeing at Court, is only their finesse & devise to wring some matter foorth, The like also is said to me that Charles hath confessed the whole of my dealing & conveyance with him, threatning me to the tower & Rack, which I hope that Charles is not of so weake a kinde to yeald so filthily to any examinacon they can make as I for my parte am resolved to abide 5000 deathes before any thing proceed from me unworthy the name of a man, Nowe therefore it may please you to use your comfortable advise & councell, & your Lo: shall here continually from me of all that passeth very glad that this proceeded from none of your house which doth confirme an assured minde in me to stand stiffe in the rest, And for keeping of Charles lre by me was done of good purpose to have delivered it my self, and to use the more surety & secrecy to the cause for that also I would have conferred with you by mouth of matters not meete to have beene comited to lres And as for Charles comitting to the Tower, I heare nothing, only praying to God to geve him constancy for these are but certen thundrings amase him, for that he is young, But I have a good opinion in his faithfull [ deleted: in his faithfull] promise to me, & in his good education & experience of the world expecting your L: answere for in honesty you shall have good cause to make a good accompte for me beseeching[fol. 70r] beseeching God to prosper your honorable proceedings, written ymediatly after the receipt of your L: schedule at x of the clock in the morning / what I writt yesterday unto you will I keepe inviolably, Send me a quire of fine paper I pray you, & some hard waxe if you any /
