The Lamp shewd last meeting was Experimented and Recomended to the care of mr Ch: Howard to obserue the manner
of its burning, the description & demonstration of it to be giuen in (Dr wren mentioning that he had a new kind of Lamp
Operator to attend & Receiue his Directions) he suggested likewise that a small socket vpon the wick being added would make
the wick furnish the oyle accoding to any proportion of time and Regulate the Lamp to be a clock orderd to be tryd
The Expt. of winding vp a Spring by the force of Gunpowder was made by the Curator, the sucesse was as he Related that
about 1 1/2 graine of powder wound vp the spring so the top which was about 4 foot high to be tryd monday againe
(crones chariot) mr. Hoskins. of making old trees fruitfull by inserting young trees planted by) The curator proposed for next
meeting (besides the particulars mentiond aboue touching the addition to the Lamp, and Repeating the expt. of winding
vp a Spring by gunpowder) an expt. improuing Circular pendulums by soe ordering them that they shall not
vary their motion by more or Lesse appendant weight which he also vndertooke to demonstrate (Operator
to take out & reconuey into frame a glasse wth a narrow mouth, such a frame of wood as the King had sent a patterne
of in a glasse)
Feb: 21. 1666. (16 single & 8 double turkish pictures shewd by mr Howards seruants to be putt into the library)
The curator produced a circular pendulum soe contriued that its motion shall be equall what euer weight
is appended to it. He affirmed that he know the Demonstration of it, was orderd to giue it in writing
at the next meeting. The same was orderd to compare the motion of this circular pendulum wth a clock
Item to bring in the Description & demonstration of the new Lamp. as also to prosecute & improue the
expt. of Raysing weights by the force of gunpowder to a greater height. (Operator to Receiue Dr. Wrens
direction for making /his/ new lamps & the addition to mr Hooks Lamps mentiond the precedent meeting - (Bullialdus the
new starr in Cello ceti.) As to that other starr in the Girdle of Andromede which the same Bullialdus esteems
to appear & Disappear by turnes as those in the neck of the whale & the swan, mr Hook affirmed to
haue seen it this winter & seuerall times anno 1664 & 1665. he was desired carefully to obserue both
these phenomena. (mr Boyle suggest. to try watch a pendulum watch in exhausted Rr. 2 to try springy bodys by weighing in water
(Sr R Moray. salt peter out of the earth of a comon.//
Febr: 28. 1666 (S P wich Returnd from Portugal of Father Iohn marks & mr Henry Iacob correspondent at Lisbon, to get
correspondents at Fernambuco) 2 coco nutts) Quadrant sent to Lisbon to marks). Bulliald query about sea compasse
(mr Boyle the variations of Olearius) Ld. Brereton compasse not mouing in Iron mine) There was produced by the
Curator a box with optick glasses fitted in it designed to contrast the power of a Long telescope into a short one
It was orderd that the eye glasses should be made to draw, and that the 2 steel glasses should be truly ground
well polished & exactly placed. (Sr. P Neile about Eustachio Diuinjs making an optick glasse wth Rock crystall wch
had veines to try whether a broad glasse or narrow one would bear the greatest aperture) The lamp formerly produced
was againe brough in wth. a small wax light to serue for a wick and soe contriued as to be thrust vp by the mouing
weight in the vessell. But this contriuance not succeeding it was suggested that there should be prouided a rush
wth. a small brasse wire in it and likewise a small waxt threed with a cotton whipt about it, this was orderd
to be prouided against next meeting. The formerly produced circular pendulum designed for an
aequall motion wth. vnequall weights, being againe spoken of, the President affirmed that though the
Inuentor had demonstrated that the bullet of the circular pendulum if it can be kept Rising or falling
in a parabola will keep its circular motion in the same since, yet he hath not Demonstrated that the
Diameter of the Parabola from the point of contact in the curue to the vertex of the Diameter is
aequall to that portion of the curue from the said point of contact to the vertex of the same curue
plus half the Latus Rectum or plus double the focus of the parabola.
March. 7. 1666. The Lamp was againe produced hauing for a wick a small threed of Lead thrust through
the midst of cottons, which melts as the cotton burnes. The new telescope produced the Last day was
orderd to be perfected against the next meeting. the curator mentiond A metall that may be ground
wth. sand & polished with putty. orderd to put it in Execution. (Dr. Wren intimated that an exact plain
was best made by motions in a streight Line) Sr. R. Moray. tht Reiue should make a 120 foot obiect glasse and the
Society would fitt & vse it) comr pett disired to obserue tides) Lists of Recomended things to seuerall persons deliuerd)
Order that the Expt. of Raising a weight or bending a spring by gunpowder be prosecuted. also Expts. wth. Dr Cottons
Loadstone. Operator to attend Dr. Wren about Lamp. & about moon globe. Orderd that the Curator bring in writing
the next meeting his demonstration of the motion of the new Lamp and likewise the demonstration of the Curue
Line in the circular pendulum. The curator was put in mind to perfect his Instrument of taking vp things
from the bottom of the sea soe as to make it serue for all depths (Crone to produce draught of new chariott)
[In margin]+   Dr. Wren brough in the description of his new Leuell which was orderd to be read next day.
March. 14. 1666./ the curator brough in his Description & demonstration of his new Lamp which was
orderd to be registred. The same produced a contriuance to make a motion of a clock to goe along
wth. a shadow on a wall for which he offerd a demonstration affirming withall that the same instrumt
would be applicable to all plaines to make all sorts of Dialls and that vpon the same principle
he would make an instrument to solue the inequality of Days. both from the suns excentricity
and his right ascension vpon the ellipticall as well as the circular hypothesis (a quadrat to be made
to send to lisbon. also a globe for a telescopicall moon) Sr. Th De Vaux paper about Candles.) mention being made in
it of multiplying the light of a candle it was recommended to the curator to consider of other ways doing the same
(a foule for repository. Croon turkish pictures left wth mr Hook) Dr. Collins letter from Mosco about shooting melt shott another from -
Dantzick of a brick making mill) Coleprese Letter about tides. turfs charked vsed for blowing tin) peat char. . .. Dr Wrens descrip
tion of new Leuell read & registred). The new telescope Referred to monday. The curator was orderd to prosecute the Experimts
of raising weights & bending springs by the force of Gunpowder to make Expts. wth Dr. cotton Loadstone Imperfect Instrument for
taking things from the bottom of the Sea, to bring in demonstration of the curue line that shall regulate the motion of the
circular pendule /so/ as to make it goe aequally with vnaequall weights. vid feb. 28. - - - - - - -
