mr Hooke Read a large Paper which he had translated out of french
giuing an account of the strange ^ /& prodigious/ ouerflowing of some Riuers
in Gascoyne written by a person who had made it his businesse
to Inquire into the truth of the matter of fact and had like
wise been inquisitiue after the cause which he explaind and illus=
trated by Diuers very conuincing circumstances, ascribing it /to/ the
subsiding of some of the Pyrenean mountaines into the subter
raneous cesters wthin the bowells of them. -
Vpon this was occasiond much Discourse of effects of the like natu
and Sr. Ionas more & mr Hooke mentiond some that had hapned
at Pendle hill of wch. a Letter formerly read in this society
had Giuen an account.
Dr. Gale Likewise added that there were many Instances of the like
nature in the mountaines of the north where the gushings out
of the water from the Hills made great gills (as they call them)
that is channells in the sides of them out of wch. the water gushes
from the mountaine -
Dr. croon read a letter from Heuelius in answer to tht he had for
merly written & sent by mr. Hally, wherein he testifyes his Respects to
the Royall society, and his Esteem of mr Hally.-
Sr. Ionas more read also a letter from mr. Hally giuing a farther
account of his Reception & entertainment in astronomicall matters
by mr Heuelius.-
mr. Hooke was desired to gett the Italian book translated into English
& printed of here which he promised to Indeauour.

Vpon the Discoursing of Opticks Sr. Ionas more said he had a peice
of mr. Gottignees in /a Latine/ manuscript of Opticks, as also Diuers papers
of mr. Gascoynes vpon the same subject. he was much Desired
by the company that he would gett them printed. mr Hooke
hauing some years since ^ /seen/ pervsed read some part of that tract
of Gottignies in mr. collins his hands Did judge it to be very
good and fit to be printed.
