After the Reading of the minutes . . . which had caused
some Discourse about fire. monr Ge E. De Spanheim
Resident for his Highnesse the Prince /Palatine & Brandenburge/ Electors being
now admitted fellow of this Society and Present at the
Debate, in order to the Better explaining the Hypothesis
about fire The Experiment of the box formerly
shewd in this assembly wa for the shewing the vse of
air in Burning was againe produced and vpon seuerall
tryalls wth. cha lighted coles set in an Iron grate wthin
the said box, and blowed on wth. Bellows shutt vp wth
them in the soe as only to make the Included air cir
culate & work vpon them It plainely appeared that
the Included air, after It had been satiated by Dis
soluing or Burning the said lighted coles was noe
Longer able or fitt to continue that Dissolution
But the coles ceased their shining & consuming and
became black wthout hauing any ashes Remaining on
them, which further shewed that the vse of Bellows
in Blowing a fire was not the remouing of those
ashes as most People suppose, But the blowing
vpon the Burning body a greater quantity of vn=
satiated air, which like a new and hungry men=
struum should more powerfully work vpon & con=
=sume and burne the heated body prepared for
thereby for that operation.
To make this theory yet more plaine Another Expt.
which had also been formerly here produced was againe
shown, to wit, The putting a lighted wax candle thr
Through the top of the box into the satiated air wthin
it. and It was by often repeating the experiment
