[In margin][manicule]   by Sr. Christopher Wren in order to Examine monr: De
Cartes Hypothesis whether the passing by of the body
of the moon did presse vpon the air and consequently
also vpon the body of the water. And that the first
tryall thereof was made at mr. Boyles chamber in Oxford

mr. Henshaw Desired that mr. Hooke would again
shew his experiment wch. he had formerly produced
in order to explaine his Hypothesis of the Reason
of the alteration of the Pressure of the Atmosphere

Dr. Grew Desired that the hypothesis he had formerly
produced here might be Considerd of for that he concei
ued that alone was sufficient to explaine the whole
Theory. The substance of wch. was, that the pressureof the air
proceeds from the salts that are Dissolued into
the air, that those salts when they are Dissolued take
Lesse Room, and soe the air becomes Lesse pent & crowded
together and consequently presses Lesse. But when the
salts are vndissolued they take more Room and soe
crowd the air more and make it presse more vpon
the stagnant Quicksiluer.

Dr. Croon also explained his hypothesis of this Pheno=
menon which was to this Effect.
