Iuly the 18th. 1678.

Sr. R Southwell. &c-

mr. Henshaw the Vice President tooke the chair.
An Expt. was shewn by putting an eel into the Exhausting Engine which
when the Instrument was made stanch presently Dyed.

vpon Discoursing about the food of fishes Dr. Croon Related that fishmongers
neuer find anything in the maws of salmon. Also that A Lady who had
been very inquisitiue in that kind had obserued the same thing.
but the Contrary is obserued in most other fish -
Dr. Grew obserud that the Gutts in salmons placed round the stomach answer
=ing the Intestinum cocum in other animalls were very full though the stomack
were empty
Sr. Iohn Hoskins Related that there was one sort of whale towards the north tht
was Reported to feed vpon flyes and that vast quantitys had been found in
the stomacks of them. that their finns seemd to serue for the straining
of them from the water. mr. Hook Related the structure of the mouth &
fins of that wch. was cast vp at Greenwich about 20 years. since
He also mention a Late Relation of he had seen printed in Low Dutch
wherein of a voyage to Spitzberge or Greenland wherein was a Des=
cription of that sort of whale together wth. a pictures of them -
mr. Henshaw affirmed that salmons did feed vpon flyes.
Ld. Bisp of Chester mentiond that he had eat a Dish of fish which had been taken
very whole out of the maw of a large fish. and that they eat very well
that they were a sort of flownders-

Then A Discourse was occasiond about Poysons. He
The Bp. of chester Related that Dr. Haruey was of opinion that A man might
be saued though shot wth. a poysd Dart if a very strong ligature were made
aboue the wound immediatly, and the mortifyd part below the Ligature were
cut off presently . neuerthelesse it was conceiued by some that this
means would not be effectuall if at Least the poyson were soe violent
as it is Reported. vnless a Ligature were made before the party were
wounded by the Dart.

Sr. R Southwell mentiond the tryall of the florentine poyson (vizt. oyle
of tobacco. the black heauy oyle that sinkes to the bottom in Distillation)
vpon a chicken Related by Sr. Iohn Finch. of wch. the Society hath
elswhere an account and hath formerly made many tryalls
Sr. I Hoskins. Related that a good quantity of fair water was the best
antidote to this poyson of Tobacco oyle
Dr. Croon Related that he had been informd of an English merchant
that had been told by this Present King of macasser that neither
himself nor his father knew any thing concerning such poysons
as they were Related to know. but that he had been told that his Grand
father knew much of poysons
