The Presidents & vice presidents being absent mr Daniell colwall was desired
to take the chair.

After the minutes Of the last Day had been read. A discourse arose about
the Phosphoros Baldwinj. concerning wch. It was affirmed that the same
was now made in England as good as that wch. was brought from beyond
Sea, and It was desired that one of them might be procured to be exami
ned at this Society at their next meeting. wch. mr Hooke sayd he
would Indeauour - -

mr. Hooke Read a Letter and Relation wch he Receiued from the Presid-
they being both sent to him from Capn. Richd Rolland from Tangier Feb:13
1677/8. conteining an account of his tryalls made wth in the deeps of the
Sea wherein he obserued that hauing according to mr Boyles Directions
Lowered by the Deep sidge line a bottle of oyle of aniseeds and two other
bottles only filld wth air, into 8 fathom water & there sufferd them to stay
a quarter of an hower. the oyl was congeald & the stoppers cork droue
into the bottle but the stopper had Leakd through its pores through wch
the same vpon pulling vp indeauourd to gett back making a noyse &
smoke. The second Expt. was wth 3 bottles in 100 fathom water the two -
bottles stopd wth. Lignum vitae were broken by the pressure of the water driuing
them into the neck, the other stopd wth cork was taken vp whole but the -
cork drouen into the bottle & filld the bottle filld wth water wch vpon being
tasted seemd somewt fresher then the rest.

vpon this obseruations a discourse arose about more exact ways of making
these kinds of tryalls in the Sea and other Deep places. And mr Hooke
affirmed that he had a way how to examine the pressure to any depth wth
the greatest ease Imaginable and that was by a cane of glasse wth wch
there had been seuerall tryalls made neer Sheerness of wch. there is an
account on the Registers. he had as also other ways for examining
the heat and cold of those submarine Regions. and to fetch vp the
water from any depth as also to fetch vp the earth sand &c from
the bottom. That he would Giue Directions for the making of such
an apparatus if there were proper persons appointed to make
tryall wth them.

Herevpon mention was made of great Depths of waters wthin Land
as of that of the lake of Geneua many hundred fathoms deep-
Dr. mapletoft related that Cardinale d'estree had caused the Lake de'
Acqua by Padua to be founded but could find noe bottom wth a whole
boatfull of Line-
