Then was Read a Letter Directed to the Royall Society sent from
Edward Smith Dated from his house wthout the South Gate of
Chichester Ian: 22. 1677. conteining a Discourse about the Ex
plication of the Smaragdine table of Hermes and the grounds of
his Philosophy It being Late the Discourse It self could not be read
but mr. Oliuer Hill being present was Desired to pervse the same
and to bring in his thoughts thereof the next thursday. which he
promised to Doe and mr. Hooke was orderd to Deliuer him the said
treatise when he should call for it.

Then mr. Chetwin propounded a fortnight since by the president
was put to the Ballot and had one and twenty votes for his Election
and was accordingly declared chosen by the vicepresident

The same was done for Dr. Dickenson. and he Declard chosen
mr. Ioseph Lane also was chosen and Declared soe at the same time

mr. Hooke produced a book of one Iean Iordan initiated Deux Ma
chines Iusques Ici inconnues &c. printed at Leyden 1677. sent by one
Magnus Hesentsalerus directed to Mr Oldenburg secretary of the Royal Society. The
Booke hauing been pervsed by mr Hooke and not found to conteine ^ /any other/ Descrip
tion of the Instruments saue to shew relate wt. they would perform which
were lookd vpon as impracticable if not impossible, the booke was orderd
to be put in the library. _

mr. Hooke also produced a book published by Matheus Campany /called/ Horologium
solo naturae motu metiens momenta temporis & Circinus Sphericus pro Lentibus
poliendis &c. ad Ludonicu 14. of which he Gaue ths following account.

That the /Publisher/ Author (who was rector of a Parochiall church seemd by some passages in his book to be brother
to that Campani who made glasses in Rome) Indeauoured to make himself the author of two inuentions
which were long since Published & shewd to this Society by one of their own members. the first about
two pendulum Rectifying one another was shewd by mr Hooke January the 2. 1666 as by the
Iournalls and many yet of the Society who cannot haue forgotten it will ^ /be/ made it appear. the Secon[d]
wch. he calls Circinus Spericus for making of Glasses is the same which was published by the said
mr. Hooke in his micrographia. /in 1664/. and . . . that he did not doubt but that this pretended inuentor was
aware of it he would not otherwise haue indeauoured to antidate it soe much as he hath by making
it preceeding to the 6th. of October 1664. quoting ^ /a letter of/ monr. Hugens for his . . .
voucher. though the words he quotes assert noe such thing. But vpon perusall of the
book it is plaine that he could neither be the author of
the one or other inuention. since he seems . . .
neither to vnderstand mathematicks or . . .
mechanicks enough to know whether the thing be true when done and therefore tis improbable
