The minutes of the Last meeting were Read

vpon wch. a Discourse arose concerning the Aether which mr Hooke
affirmed to be the menstruum vehicle or fluidest part of the.
air into wch. the Exhalation or vapours that compose the
Atmosphere are Dissolued or take after the same man
ner as Salt, sugar or any other Dissoluable /tinging/ body are Disso
solued or taken vp by water or other dissoluing liquor _

That the atmosphere or air that Grauitated on the quicksil
uer in the Barometer was only that part wch. was thus Dissol
and taken vp and that the other part or aether Did readily
and freely peruade the parts of glasse whence glasse becom
as it were a strainer to separate between the aether &
the Grosse air. that according to the quantity of these
vapours or exhalations Raised vp & suspended thus by
the aether in the atmosphere so was the pressure of
it vpon the mercury in the Barometer, that the
Rarefaction and Condensation of these vapours did
not at all alter the pressure prouided the same - -
quantity of the said vapours were in both the
said conditions of the vap the same
The vice president Doubted whether there were any
such thing as that Aether which mr. Hook had
hypothetically supposed and said that he would very
gladly see some experiment that would make it
euident that there is such a body mixt wth. the air

To wch. mr Hooke Replyd that he could by hundreds of
Experiments Euidence the reallity of such a body and
that from those Expts. he was able to collect the seue=
rall proprietys of that Body And How many &
how very considerable effects it produced in bodys.
