Mr Hook produced a peice of Leather wch. he had made in imitation of the impe
netrable Leather of the french. this was more supple then the said french Leather &
It was judged that the french had more wax in its composition then this produced
and by the smell the french seemd to be made of some ingredients of a more
pleasing smell then thisof R H wch. smelt more strongly of the boyled sallad
oyl. the composition in wch. it had been soaked being nothing but sallet oyle
& bees wax boyled together for an hower or two. this Leather though very -
limber was found to hold water for some time wthout being wett through
but whether it would hold soe wele as the french further tryall was to be made
as also of some other composition for soaking the skins in that they might smell
more like those from france.

After this the 3d Expt. was shewd by R H. to verify the truth of his former assertions con
cerning the exceeding great curiosity of the new contriued poyse for examined the
^/comparatiue/ weight of Liquors euen to the 100000 part of their bulk.. . . and it was
before the whole company euidently shewd that the eighth part of a graine would
manifestly turn that scaleeither way and make it preponderate In wch. it was
putt and soe moue a body that was about 4th in weight either vpwards or
Downwards. now there being in 4th weight of an 176320 eigth parts of a graine
It ^/thence/ follows that 1/176320 /part/ of the Bulk of the weight of the water alterd was
& therby Discouerd which is almost beyond Imagination.. . ./&/ it was further
asserted by RH that this niceness might be as much farther augmented as should
be desired or ^/was/ necessary for any manner of curious tryall wch was done by making
the poyse soe much larger. and that in such tryalls where great quantitys of
liquors would be troublesome to obtaine; it was shewd by demonstrated by the
said R Hhow a ^/recipient/ vessell should be contriued that wth. some ounces of liquor
the examination might be made of a poise of 10, 20 or more pounds in
weight, euen to the accuratenesse of the 10th part of a graine. And to mak
it euident that a very small alteration of the water would be made sensible by this poyse
about the quantity of two graines of salt was put into about two gallons of water
and it was /notable/euident to al the spectators that the poise grew very /remarkably/.. . . lighter
the same also was repeated and by a 2dtryall wth. the like effect the same.. . .was verifyed
some furthers tryalls would haue been made but it being .. . . Late - the Society
Rose and left the further prosecution of these Expts to thenext daye some other time
