Dr. Wallis sayd that they found the Latitude of Oxford now not to be
more than 51o 4'6. where as Diuers haue put it neer 10 minutes
more. Mr. Smith sayd that Constantinople was now found
to be 40o: 5'7. whereas it is put in many mapps in 43o. 0'0.

A second Letter of Mor. Iustell to Mr. Hooke was Read, Giuing an account
1. of the German Physitian that Distilled the matter taken out of a
plague sore. 2d. of the Artist that had made a Burning Speculum
of 3 foot 8 inches Diameter whose focus was 3 1/2 distant.



Dr. Gale was Desired to Returne an answer to the said Letter wth. the thanks of the
Society for his communication and to send him answers to wt he Desired.
This occasiond some further Discourse about the magneticall vari
ation of the needle as also of the best form of Dipping and
variation needles.

Capn. Wood said that his needle was soe orderd as to set itself
in the meridian and Soe to find its owne dipping. which was
concluded to be the Best way.

The same affirmed that the Island of Huas which was almos[t]
all magneticall Did notwthstanding not at all cause any vari
ation of the Compasse at sea very neer to it

The same also affirmed that he had found the variation of the needle
at Flores & Coruo which was formerly nothing now to be 9
Degrees west wards.

Mr. Hooke produced his new Leuell & explained the same
And shewd wherein he conceiued it was beyond any kind
of Leuell yet made both for plainesse certainty & Exact
nesse.
