vpon the obiections made by Mr Hooke to the inferences made by
Mr Perkins the Last Day from his Expts shewd wth. a Dipping needle
variously inclined in the north & south azymuthes, that the compasse
needle would also vary if the south end thereof were made to Dip. Mr
Perkins explained what he meant by the north end of the Dipping
needles pointing south wards beyond the equator.

Mr Hook also explaind his theory those experiments and shewd
that there was nothing in them which Did vary vary from the known
magneticale Rules, and shewd the Reason of the Directing of the
Dipping needle towards other places than it would naturally doe
if it were not Limited & Restrained and that in this Restraint it
did as neer as it could place itself in its most naturall posture
that this had noe manner of influence vpon the common compasse
needle whether it hung horizontall or whether it dipped to the
south or north end Dipped below it. And becaue some misvn
derstandings were about the names of the north & south ends of
the needle, Mr Hooke explained what he meant by pointting
northwards and southwards and shewd that he meant vizt towar
towards any point of a hemisphere on the north side or south
side of the east and west azymyth whether which he . . . . . .
made more intelligible by a Draught whereby he shewd also
the manner of the Dipping of the needle below the horizon
