Workdiary 2 (Aphorisms in French, 1647)
Content: Literary aphorisms from 1647 in
French, from Bk 1 of
Gaultier de Costes, sieur de la Calprenède,
Cassandre (Paris,
1642 and subsequent editions to 1666), a chivalric romance set in
ancient Greece and Persia.
General Information
- Creation: 1647
- Hands: Robert Boyle (all entries)
- Source: Royal Society, Boyle Papers 44, fols. 108-13
- Languages: French (70 entries)
- Length: 70 entries, unnumbered
- Format: The pages of this workdiary are
quarto-sized and appear to come from a bound notebook of that size. In this,
Workdiary 2 is very similar to Workdiary 1, whose pages are of the same size
and record extracts from the same French romance. However, it is likely that
they come from separate notebooks, and that 2 is not merely a continuation of 1
(despite its present placement in BP 44). Firstly, fol. 107v of 1 ends with the
words 'La Fin'. In addition, the pages of 2 are gilt-edged, while those of 1
are not, and the extracts clearly come from Bk 1 of
Cassandre, while those in 1 that can be
traced come mostly from Bk 5. Nevertheless, both workdiaries do appear to come
from the same period when Boyle was reading the romance
Cassandre.
- Note 1: Fols. 112 and 113 are blank, except for
10 lines of the final entry (and the trailer 'La Fin') written at the top of
fol. 112r
