The bearer hereof Mary Garlick a widow here in Tortworth is the mother of that child for the placing of whom in Wotton school & making him partaker of that exhibition there which is dispensed by your favour & direction my brother Stephens made request unto you & I give you hearty thanks praying you to bee well assured that by how much the poorer the parties be to whom you impart this bounty so much the more shall your recompense be from him that hath said it 'seeing you did it unto these you did it unto mee'. She not being known unto you as I suppose by face desires my letter as a certifica[te] ...[o]f her honesty & poverty having been a nurse ...s once to my sister Stephens so thrice to my ...[wi]fe & her son being as apt to learn ...[a]s most young scholars of his age concerning ...[w]hom I have instructed Mr Turner by word of mouth of his ability & directed him not to spare him if he find him negligent.
