The bearer hereof Mary Garlick a widow here in Tortworth is the mother of that child for the placinge of whom in Wotton schoole & makinge him partaker of that exhibition there which is dispensed by your favour & direction my brother Stephens made request unto yow & I give yow harty thankes prayinge you to bee well assured that by how much the poorer the parties bee to whom yow impart this bounty so much the more shall your recompense bee from him that hath said it seeinge yow did it unto these yow did it unto me Shee not beinge known unto yow as I suppose by face desires my letter as a certifica[te] ...[o]f her honesty & poverty havinge bin a nurse ...s once to my sister Stephens so thrice to my ...[wi]fe & her sonne beinge as apt to learne ...[a]s most young scholers of his age concerninge ...[w]hom I haue instructed Mr Turner by word of mouth of his ability & directed him not to spare him if hee finde him negligent.
