Jan Broadway is working on the biography of William Dugdale, the seventeenth-century historian and herald. Accounts of Dugdale's life have in the past drawn heavily on his autobiography, which Jan in her previous work has shown to be misleading in many respects.
In preparation for writing Dugdale's biography. Jan is creating a catalogue of his correspondence. An edition of Dugdale's correspondence was published by William Hamper in 1827 along with his Life and Diary, but this includes only a couple of hundred letters. Jan's database currently includes 750 letters either to or from Dugdale. Any information about letters written to or by William Dugdale which survive beyond the main collections listed by the National Register of Archives would be gratefully received.
