William Dugdale (1605-1686)

Jan Broadway has now published the first full-length biography of William Dugdale, the seventeenth-century historian and herald. Accounts of Dugdale's life have in the past drawn heavily on his autobiography, which Jan in her previous work has shown to be misleading in many respects. William Dugdale: A Life of the Warwickshire Historian and Herald is based on Dugdale's surviving correspondence and his other copious archival remains.

In preparation for writing Dugdale's biography. Jan created a catalogue of his correspondence. An edition of Dugdale's correspondence was published by William Hamper in 1827 along with his Life and Diary, but this includes only a couple of hundred letters. Jan's database includes over a thousand letters either to or from Dugdale. This is now available online.
