Tom took his BA in English at Reading, and became interested in early modern travel writing after studying the works of Richard Hakluyt. He then moved to Queen Mary, taking the MA in Renaissance Studies in the School of English, and encountered the eccentric travel writings of Fynes Morison. He is embarking on an AHRC-funded PhD at CELL studying Morison's Latin manuscripts held at the British Library.
