James studied French and Arabic at Pembroke College, Cambridge, graduating in 2007, and completed an MRes in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at Queen Mary, University of London, in 2011.

He is currently studying for a PhD examining the social impact of seventeenth-century natural philosophical discoveries about light and is a co-editor of the 'Queen Mary Review'.
