Preparation for class on 20 February

Just to remind ourselves: next week (20 February) we will continue reading Betty Hageman's article on 'the matchless Orinda'.
Melissa will bring in her transcription of the opening letter-book letter by Mary Evelyn, in which she comments negatively on Margaret Cavendish (among other barbed remarks). And Gabrielle will look out a couple of Katherine Philips poems from the OUP edition (or an earlier edition), for us to look at also.
In the second half of the class we will begin to discuss the pitfalls lying in wait for the scholar who uses a printed edition of an author's 'familiar' letters — either a modern critical edition, or an early, contemporary compilation of correspondence.
