On June 8 the MA and MRes students — and a liberal helping of our outstanding PhD students — gathered to celebrate Robyn's progress towards motherhood and Lisa's return to full health. Noone was surprised that it was as memorable and enjoyable as CELL events always magically contrive to be.

CELL celebrated the end of the semester and Christmas with a swell party.

Through the miracle of pot luck, the dinner table heaved with goodies, from a joint of roast beef to a host of chocolate cupcakes, via cheese muffins, tiramisu, and bread and butter pudding, all washed down with homebrew beer and sensibly-priced cava.

In late April the CELL staff and graduate students went on a 3 day field trip to Leiden in the Netherlands.
They combined an intensive programme of visits to early modern museums and gardens — the Boerhaave Museum, the Bibliotheca Thysiana, the Hortus Botanicus — with a trip to the Dutch tulip gardens in high season.

Through the good offices of Arnoud Visser and Nadine Akkerman we were given an inspiring guided tour of the Bibliotheca Thysiana.
The seventeenth-century book-wheel was just one of a cornucopia of wonderful history of the book items we were allowed to see.

On our visit to the Boerhaave Museum we were greeted and treated to coffee by the entire staff.
Our warm welcome was followed by a tour which engrossed all the students and staff — even those who had never considered that they were interested in the history of science.

Between our various academic visits, staff and students got to know Leiden in the spring sunshine.
One of our favourite excursions was a gentle tour of Leiden by canal, in the care of a taciturn and phlegmatic boatman who overcame the calamity of a snagged propeller without flinching, or even letting us know that anything was amiss.

The CELL staff took their talented group of MA and MRes students on the annual day-long trip to Jesus College Old library, the Wren library at Trinity College, and the Pepys library at Magdelen College. The librarians and archivists allowed us to see many fascinating documents and early printed books.
