Out of the Closet: Love, Power and Houses in 18th Century England
Amanda Vickery, author of The Gentleman's Daughter, gave the 2008 HarperCollins History Lecture at RIBA in central London, on 12 November 2008. See the HarperCollins lecture 2008 image gallery on this site for more pictures!
A large and enthusiastic audience listened spellbound as Dr Vickery delivered a gripping lecture on the central place played in Georgian life in England by domestic organisation and management. She argued that in spite of the lack of curiosity in the historical literature concerning life in the home in eighteenth-century England, there are rich sources to be mined to explore this fascinating area.
The lecture was followed by dinner for 100 in RIBA's glamorous Florence Hall. There was jazz and dancing.
