This course is an opportunity to gain grounding in Classical Latin (the foundation for Medieval and Renaissance Latin) and to become sufficiently familiar with Latin primers and dictionaries to be able to make ad hoc translations of Latin phrases, sentences and short texts.
Teaching materials will include the Cambridge University Press 'Reading Latin' course designed for mature students, and selected texts from the Classical and Early Modern periods. Each seminar will comprise some reading aloud and translation of Latin text, an explanation of grammar covered, and grammatical exercises.
Students will not be required to purchase the text book used, although a Latin dictionary and a primer will be recommended.
