Iune. 26. 1672. Mr Hooke produced a new kind of speaking trumpet figured Bell wise repercussing
& by degrees Dilating it self, which being tryed & compared with that of Mr Coniers, was found to exceed it -
It was ordered that against the next Day, a pipe of the forme of an ordinary trumpet should be made widening
by degrees in the figure of a Cone cutt off. furnished with a mouth peice. [Grew the Pith of a thistle & spirall of

occasion to speak of the lun Respiration and of the principall vse thereof, which Mr Hooke said he thought to be
that by the air something essentiall to life might be conveyed into the blood, and something that was noysome to
it /be/ discharged back into the air, and he wished that meanes might be used to Discouer whether there are not Values
in the arterys, by which the air may passe into all the parts of the Blood. For which purpose it was suggested
that an iniection might be made into those vessells, & particularly into some artery, with melted bees wax
mixed with tallow and coloured thereby to Make the vessells appear round and full, to see what might be fur-
ther discoured in their structure. This was Recomended to the Physitians of the Society. [a sheet of Cassinjs
about his hypoth: of & his satellits] this Paper was comitted to the Perusall of Mr Hooke who was desired to make
a Report of it to the Society at their next meeting, Especially since the authour Expresses his desire of having the
Sense of the Society or some members thereof vpon the said paper. Mr Hooke took both the letter & paper with him
The same was put in mind to shew the next Day the Expt with glasse plates in Reference to mr Newtons theory of
Light, as also to bring in what he hath further to offer vpon that Subiect.
Iuly. 3. Grew to try discovery of Malpighis Peristaltick] Mr. Hooke was called vpon for making a Report Concerning Sigr -
Cassinjs paper. &c. what he said of it was Desired to giue in Writing, that it might be without Mistake im=
parted to Cassinj who had desird that fauour in his Letter [Malpighj letter of Ouary. Swamerdams Present. hygens ap-
plause of newton glasse & theory.] Mr. Hooke upon Occasion said, that he found that a Refracting obiect glasse
did collect more rays to a point, then a Reflecting one both of the same sphere. He was desired to shew this
by expt.
Iuly. 10. [Grew shewd fibers between pith & bark [NB I had shewed them long before as appears by this booke vid.
Mr. Hooke affirmed that he had made a Refracting Obiect glasse vpon the same sphere with a Reflecting one
and found that it Represents the Object Brighter of the same charge and the same aperture with a Re-
flecting one. He was Desired to shew the Expt. of it by Comparing two such glasses together of the same -
sphere. Mr. Hooke gaue an account of Sigr. Cassinj's paper concerning the Systeme of & his satellites. Im
porting that it was considerable, and Deserued to be good notice taken of in the Obseruations of the motio
of those starrs. The Society adiourning, Expts. Recomended to be presented & Discoursd of at Gresha Colledge on frydays.

Hobbs Lux mathemat] Horroxij Opea. Posthuma] An account being demanded of what tryalls had been made
of the Reflecting telescope of M Newton. Mr Hooke said that he had hitherto wanted a Mould of a sufficient
Bignesse for a speculum designed by him of 15 inches Diameter for a tube of 10 foot long But that he hoped
to haue in a week or fortnight such a mould cast wherein a Speculum of that bignesse might be well wrought
& polisht. Since that, During the Soc: recesse there had been comunicated to the Gentlemen that met at Gresham Colledge
Mr Hygens conjecture about the odde phenomenon of the mercurys standing top full of well cleensed of air, euen to the height
of 75 inches, & that the presidt. & Dr. Wallis had suggested diuer expts. determining the cause of that strange effect, it was in -
quired what had been done in this matter. mr Hooke answered that some tryalls had been made about it ^ /&/ that he would
bring in an account of them in Writing the next Day. [grew had describd some transverse sectios of plants [he was exhorted
to finish 2 or 3 plants in all their parts to be printed early before they be arrogated by strangers [Lister of kermes & Snayles -
Nou. 6. Mr Hooke read a Discourse of his concerning his thoughts of the Expt. of the quicksiluer standing top full
and farr aboue the height of 29 inches together wth. some expts. made by him, in order to Determine the cause of
that odde phenomenon. He Receiud the thanks of the Company, with an order to prepare those Expts. for the view
of the Society. [there was also Read a letter of Dr Wallis of Oct. 25. 1672. written from Oxford to mr Oldenburg
suggesting Diuers Expts. for Elucidation of the same phenomenon, this Letter was Deliuerd to mr Hooke & orderd to be
inserted in the Letter Booke. [Heuelius of Eclipse. Aug. 72. & of new star in collo sygni.] mr Hook produced 2 books. 1 Ottonii
Gericj Experimenta Magdeburgica &c. 2 morhoffj epist de Scypho uitreo &c mouing that they might be bought by the Soc
for their Library. which the company consented to. The same mentiond one Expt. there mentiond fitt to be tryd. i.e.
That of a sulphur bell hauing a considerable attractiue power & Representing the proprietys of the Earth. mr Lock
said that he had made some Expts. with such a ball, and would bring it to the Soc: next meeting -- Mr Henshaws Letters
De mure Norwagico & of Picarts Obss. in Denmark.] mr Hooke was put in mind of the large telescopicall spe-
culum &c and also of the Expts. for Examining the truth of Newtons Doctrine of colours. -
mr townlys figure representing a thermometricall figure was to be drawn large by the amanuensis for next meeting
Nov: 13. Sr. R Moray new bee hiue) The Expt. about the high suspension of Mercury being calld for, it was found.
that it had miscarried.] Mr Hooke having made a Report concening the Expts. suggested by the President &
Dr Wallis. (NB. this Report is noe where els mentiond.) which was a comon trick with Oldenb. not to Register what
things I performed). It was orderd that the Prest. Experiments not being made aright nor that of Mr Hugens
with a Syphon in the open air they should be made both before the Society as soon as might be. Mr. Hooke
proposed a way of making the said Expts. with a Syphon in the open air by double pipes and by blowing
them both into one ball. he was desired to make vse of this contriuance. Mr. Hooke suggested that
It were worth trying whether air be consumed or be increased by Burning. He was desired to Divise
Some expts. for Determining his quere. Mr. Boyle suggested that it might be tryed to make air of
finer bodys than ordinary . Such as are Distilled liquors or chymicall salts in Distilled liquors, to find whether
such air will be more compresst by force than comon air. The same suggested also that It might be examined whether
in making salt peter by art there is any air intercepted & comprest.
