And mr. Hooke mentioning that he had contriued an Instrument for the same purpose performing
the thing with more conueniency and to be made wth more ease and farr lesse charge, he was desired
to produce that contriuance the next Day which he promised to Doe. mr Packer moued that an Engine
might be considerd of more conuenient and proper to make Cyder than that which is now Im

Octob: 10. 1667. The History of the R Society. The expt. of opening the thorax of a dog orderd the Last
meeting was made by Dr. Lower & mr Hooke which succeeded well as it did formerly according to the
account already registred thereof. Sr. G. Ent Reflecting vpon this Expt. sayd that it shewd what was not the vse
of Respiration but not wt it was. that the Lungs not beating at all but only kept extended wth. fresh air blown
in by bellows, did shew that the Lungs did not serue to promote by agitation the motion of the Blood. Mr
Hooke considerd that the dog being continually supplyed wth fresh air was kept aliue, but was ready
Dye if either he was Left vnsupplyed or his Lung only kept full wth. the same air, and then conceiud
that the true vse of Respiration was to discharge the fumes of the blood. (mr. Gascoynes micometer
produced by D Crone) mr Hooke produced also his Instrument for the same purpose but made with farr
Lesse charge performing the thing wth. more ease. he was orderd to haue such a one made for the

Oct: 17. 1667. Dr. Lower peircing the sides of a dog made and cutting 2 nerues passng to his liuer made him broken
winded) The Bellows expt. being againe considerd) It was obserued by mr. Hooke that this expt seemd to shew
that an animal might be kept aliue wthout any motion of the Lungs [(only by a continued supply of fresh air
[In margin]Vz   and that the motion of the lungs] did not contribute to the circulation of the blood, he was desired to
bring in an exact Description of this expt. as it was now Improued. It was also moued that it might be
considerd whether it was the emission and Discharge of fumes or the intromission of fresh air
that preserued this animall aliue) Sr. Th Devaux his paper about Soap making was deliuerd by order to
mr Hooke, who hath vndertaken to giue an account of that trade. (transfusion to be tryd on men)
For the next meeting was orderd by mr Hookes suggestion the experiment of making the blood of an animall
passe from one side to another out of the vena arteriosa into the aorta with out passing through the Lungs
Dr. Lower & mr Hooke were desired to take care of this expt. -
Oct. 24. 1667. there was made a magneticall Expt. seeming to shew that the poles of the magnet doe
as well attract as direct ordd. tht the Expt. be repeated the next day in a bigger box closed wth. glasse as also that an
account of it be brought in in writing by the Curator (Dr Lowers account of broken winded dog q whether perfora

been done already in forrein parts. Sr. G. Ent suggested that he thought it most aduisable to try it vpon some mad person in Bedlam
this suggestion being seconded by diuers other physitians of the Society. Dr. Lower Dr King mr Th: cox & mr. Hooke were desired to speake
wth. Dr. Allein the present Phys: of Bedlam about the Execution of this tryall & to let him know the opinions here declared con
