mr. Hooke then Read his Discourse and Lecture vpon the said Subiect in which he Explained
the Seuerall phenomena of the said Experiment shewed the Preceeding and at this meeting
together with the causes and Reasons of the said phenomena. -
Then A Pacquett was opened which was deliuered to mr Hooke by One of the 3 strang
=ers who had been present at the said meeting, it was Directed to mr Hally secretary
of the Society and was Conteined a Letter from Mr Reiselius and two small treatises
the one of the said Reiselius his Description of the Wertemburge Siphon. the other
a Discourse of


These were recommended to mr. Hooke to Peruse and to giue an account of them
at the next meeting -

mr Hooke Acquainted the Society with the account he had procured from Mr
whitehead the mathematicall Instrument-maker of the Extraordinary Loadstone
which he had Sould to mr. Meister his Majtys. Engeneer which was as followeth
That the said Loadstone was very neer of a cubicall forme each side of which -
was very neer one inch & an half in length.
That the said cubicall stone was in weight 9 ounces and very neer 3 penny weight
haberdupoise.
That it took vp & sustained when Cupped twenty fowr pounds & ten ounces of
Haberdupoise weight of Iron.
That a Souldiers Beyanett by the strength of the touch of it took vp & susteined
10 ounces of Iron.
That he bought the said stone for 10ll. and when Capped and fitted sould it to mr.
meister for 80ll. sterling.
This Account mr. Whitehead gaue him Iune 20. 1691./
mr. Henshaw added that he had seen a bayonett toucht by it. which took vp an iron of 8 ounce
and that took vp and susteind at the same time another iron of three ounces.
