May. 9. 1667. The Brick engine was produced againe. and tryd wth some clay but that being
too stiff the tryall suceeded not. the company discoursing afterwards vpon the whole & considering
that this way would require space of ground to lay the bricks thus made thought best to lay it asid
(Dr. King of cutting dogs skin) Dr Clack of cutting out doggs spleen). anatomicall comitte at Sr. G Ents Lobsters) Sr R mor
Aub: Parrys work). The curator was orderd to send to Sr. G Ent the medicall presented by mor meniot to the
Society to pervse & giue account. The same was orderd to procure dipping & Horizontall needles as nice
as could be gotten. as also so make the apparatus ready fit to obserue the variation of the needle
Expt. for next day. comparing reflecting tube, 2 opening thorax of dog & keep him aliue wth. bellow. 3 tryall
wth. Dr. Cottons Loadstone 4. the tryall in St. Iames park of measuring the earth.
May. 16. 1667. Bulliald Letter. Algebraick proposition of reducing a biquad: aequation into 2 quadr: they
which may be effected in plaine Geometry. mr Collins sayd that problem was explained in the high duch algebra
of Iohn Henry Rohm Dr. Pells scoller. The curator produced the 2 glasse tubes. one of 6 foot and
another the new way by reflection being compared by exchanging the glasses the company Iudged
the comon one to shew the obiect more cleer than the other did though both shewd the obiect of
the same bignesse. vpon consideration it was found & declared by the Curator that the Reflecting
box had seuerall defects. 1 that the intermediat glasse was too thick 2ly that the glasses were
not ground smooth 3 that one of the glasses was conuex the other concaue of which defects
he Iudging easy to be cured it was orderd that these defects be remedyd against next meeting
The great Loadstone of 60ll. weight was tryed. both peices being tyed together. it moued a needle
at about 7 1/2 foot distance the great peice at about 7 foot distance, the little at neer 6 foot
orderd that it should be tryd by the curator againe in priuate and an account of wt he obserud
be brought in. as also it should be tryd how farr a good magnet moues Iron. (Mr Boyles. to try
the declination in the Ruines) orderd that the curator should take care to haue this done -
It was inquired how the quicksiluer stood about and at the time of the fire the curator affirmed
that he Had found it very high but mr Boyle had not found his to be soe,. (colwall obseruation
of standerd for 7 months and at the time of the fire) the apparatus for obseruing variation at white hall
to be made ready). The curator mentiond that he had a way to handle the needle soe that it should
moue with friction. The same was put in mond to prosecute the Expt of measuring the earth. (D King

May. 23. 1667. expt. not Ready (Dutchesse of newcastle) Dr. Kings paper about corrosion by Cider.

[In margin]B.   made to find whether it be the supply of fresh air or the motion of the lungs that keeps animalls
aliue. which he sayd might be done by cutting a hole in the thorax & making an incision
in the Lungs and blowing into them by the Aspira arteria. Orderd this expt. to be made as soon as
conueniently it could be done. the same moued that the intestinum Rectum in some animall
might be cutt off which he thought could be as easily done as the taking out of the spleen order
was giuen to make this Expt. likewise. (Expt for Entertain Dutchess of newcastle. 1 of colours. 2 mixing
cold liquors for producing. 3 swimming of bodys in the midst of water. 4 dissoluing meat in oyle of vitroll
5. weighing air in a Recieuer by Rarifying engine 6. flatt marble 7. magnetick Expts., as terrella driuing
oft steel dust at its poles 8. good microscopors these mr Boyle & the curator were desired to prouide
and take care of.
May. 30. 1667 (Petits Letter) magnetick expts. variation of Variation) The curator was put in mind
of making Ready the apparatus magneticus. to obserue the variation of needle at Whitehall & London
Dr. Popes letter to mr Hooke dated at exeter 25 of May 1667 was read giuing account of wormes in cormorants
orderd that the letter be filed vp and dr. Pope to inquire whether those cormorants haue wormes in their
stomacks at all seasons of the year. another Letter from Dr. Pope about Groutt ale (turberuill of
the surviuing of one whose spleen was cut out) Dutchess of newcastle intertaynd wth. 1 weighing
the air in a glasse Recr. of 9 gallons & 3 pints. which exhausted weighed & opend to let in air
weighed 1 ounce & 71 caratts more than when exhausted. Expt. of mixing colours. 3 cold liquors
by mixture made hott. 4 water boyle in Rarifying engine . and making a bladder swell 5
bodys floating in medio aquae. 2 marbles separated by 47ll./ The dutches withdrawn mr Hooke
was putt in mind to make the Expt. in St Iames park on munday morn next. (colwall obseru
produced) Anatomicall expt. for next day. reflecting box rectifyd. -
Iune: 6. 1667. Dr. Popes paper to mr Hooke of Grout ale read and orderd to be filed. the sowernes
of this liquor caused Discourse of sowerness in Generall & of curing sower liquors. some said vintners
restored sower wines by quick lime & calcined substance which by precipitating the sowerness restore
such wines. Ropy wines past Recouery. Red Led sweetens vinegar. to be made next day. Oculj Can
crorum oyster shell crabs claws chalk &c. the curator to take care of this expt. (mr Hoskins that grape
husks turne wine into vinegar.) Balls obseruation of weather) The curator mentiond that 6 or
7 howres before the beginning of yesterdays storme of wind the quicksiluer in the wheel barometer had
falln very considerably almost a quarter of the Circle. mr Colwall seconded this by his own obseruation)
(kings account of bleeding dog into sheep) Sheep wth calues blood after 3 week dyed. mr Hoskins about muscovy
stone. the curator to measure earth in Park next munday. also to perfect reflecting box he intimated that this way of
telescopes would serue for a helioscope to looke vpon the sun without offence to the eye. - -
