Ian: 15. 1679/80.

mr. Henshaw the Vice Prest. tooke the chair.

The minutes of Ian. 8 were Read, which gaue occasion to
Discouse about the Expt. made the Last meeting wth Camphir
and Aqua fortis -
mr. Henshaw Related that camphire soe liquifyed had been
found a certain & speedy Remedy for the toothach ^ /of a hollow toot/.
Dr. Grew supposd it might be from the acidity giuen it by
the Aqua fortis, for that all acid did very much contribute
to the fastning & strengthning of the teeth.
mr. Hooke supposd that a moderate acid might serue to clear
the teeth if foul, but that the Acidity of Aqua fortis was very
much too violent, and conceiued it would Rather Dammage
the teeth by fetching off not only the foulnesse, but also the
hard shell of the tooth it self; and soe Leaue it more Sub
iect to externall iniurys from acids or other noxious qualitys
and that It is a generall obseruation that after eating sharp
and Acid Iuices the teeth will for some time be very sensible &
tender and be much more affected wth sharp or sweet Iuices
or wth. hot or cold substances then at other times -
mr. Pouey Related from his own experience vpon his own teeth -
that the filing of a long ^/& slender/ tooth had made it grow thick
and fill the place between the other teeth.
mr. Henshaw Related an Experience of setting an articificall
tooth into the place of an other tooth newly drawn out
whereby it proued that the artificiall tooth soe put into the
socket . . . . . of the iaw, the iaw was obserud
to close and grow about the same and fix it as if it had been
the naturall tooth. -

mr Pouey Related that he had known a great part of the Iaw
bone on one side taken out & yet the person was able to chew
& grind his meat. Mention was made also of others who had
lost all their teeth, who were yet able to chew their food
their gumms growing Callous.
