mr. Hooke related the Designe of the Expt. about Respiration
and moued that there might be a comtee. appointed of the Physi
tians and such other persons of the Society as Desired to be fur
ther satisfyd concerning that Inquiry; in order to make that
Experiment on some other Day then the meeting Day for that
the said expt. cannot be tryd wthin the time of meeting and
wthall propounded it as a very desirable thing for the promo
ting the ends of the Society that the committys formerly ap=
pointed for the tryall & examination of seuerall matters
might be againe reuiued.




Herevpon a comtee. was appointed to make tryall of this expt
of Respiration to wit. Dr. Croon Dr. mapletoft. /Dr Allen/ mr. Hill mr. Hens
and such others of the society as should desire to be present at it


Vpon this was occasiond a Discourse about Respiration -
Dr. Crone was of opinion that the steames from the breath &
body were the occasion of the Dying of such animalls as were
Inclosed in a vessell. . . . mr Hooke obiected that if soe then
An animall would included in condensed air would be stifled
by those steames sooner then one included in a vessell out
of wch. a part of the air was exhausted, whereas the quite
contrary appeared by experiment. But that he further
added that he Rather conceiued it to proceed from the Sati
ating of the Dissoluing Part of the air and soe making the
Remaining part effeat and vselesse for maintaining the Life
of animals wch. seemd to haue much the same nature wth
flame and fire, for that the same thing effects Did seem to hap
pen to it. Herevpon mr. Henshaw mentiond the experiment
that he had formerly made in a box wth. bellows and coles
the account of wch. hath been formerly giuen to the Society.
The President therevpon Desired that this experiment might be
againe shewed at the meeting of the Society the next Day -
