of any liquor Examined thereby might be Discouerd thereby though it were
alterd but a 1000 . 10000 or 100000 part of it -

Dr. Croon conceiud that the same thing might be Discouerd by the help
of a large beame weighing a great quantity of such a fluid, But
It was shewn that it was wholy impossible to come any thing neer that
exactnesse wth. any such beam though neuer soe /curiously/.. . . made because
the great weights that much be putt into the scales of the said beame-
would if the edges of the middle pin of the Beame were very sharp not
only flatten them but presse and sink an impression into the holes thereof
and that whereas half an ounce possibly would be requisite to turne the most
exact beam when chargd wth 200 weight at an end in this half a grain
would doe the same effect.
Dr. crone also vrged that this was the same wth. the common water poise
But mr. Hooke shewd wherein It .. . . Differd. namely that
whereas the most exactest of that kind that he had hitherto seen -
would not distinguish to .. . . much /smaller quantity/ .. . . then about a hundredth
part of the Bulk this would to a hundred thousanth. wch. was a 1000 -
more exact. And secondly that whereas that did it only Indetermi-
nately and wthout any respect to the specifique grauity by vncer
taine Diuisions this /was Designed to/Did Define and Determine - that also by
giuing the proportion /that/.. . . the /said/ alteration of had to the whole.
This was the third Instrument of this kind wch. was produced here by mrHooke.
And the reason he gaue of his soe doing was that It was not his Designe or In
tention to Load or trouble this ^/society/ at their meeting wth a confused Enumeration -
of Experiments of one kind wch. might be made wth euery one of the said Instru
ments that being only the work of a Labourer of operator to performe when
once the instruments were contriued and the method chalked out, But his
Designe was rather to Improue and Increase the Distinguishing facultys
of the senses in order.. . ./Reduce//..//things/not only those things not only in order
to reduce those things wch. are already sensible /to our organs vnassisted/ to number weight & measure
But also in order to the .. . .magnifying augmenting and Inlarging the
limits of their power, And soe as to be able to doe the same things in Regi
ons ^/of matter/ hitherto vnaccessible and impenetrable & imperceptible by the senses vn
assisted. /Because/ this as it Doth inlarge the Empire of the senses soe it doth beseege & straighten
the recesses of nature and the vse of these well plyd ^/though best/ by the hands of the common
souldier will .. . . in short time force nature to yeald.
euen the most .. . . vnaccessible fortresses
