aperture of 2 inches. RH his accounts of Refractions and of Vipers teeth Read. RH
propounded the Expt. on the Lungs of a dog wth bellows - nou: 9 Sr. Iohn Cutler
hauing founded a Lecture and settled an annuall stipend ^ /of 50 pounds/ vpon mr Hooke as
Professor During his life Entrusting the society wth. the Direction & Care thereof
was elected Honorary member of the said Society & Sr. W Petty Dr
wilkins Dr. whistler & mr Grant were appointed to attend him in the
name of the Society wth. the following order
vpon Report made to this society by Dr. Whistler that Sr. I. C. knight & Bart
had declared his Resolution to bestow vpon mr. Rob: Hooke during his Life an annual
stipend of 50ll. to be paid half yearly, hauing already aduanced the the summ
of 25ll. for the first half year ending at Lady Day next. In consideration
of wch. yearly stipend the said Sr. I Cutler is willing to refer it to the Presi
dent councell & fellows of the R S of Lond for improuing Nat: Knowl: to
Direct & appoint the said mr. Hooke how many Lectures he shall Read
& when & vpon wt subjects; or what kind of Inquirys by way of expt. he
shall be ingaged to prosecute. This society doth herevpon Returne their hearty
thanks to Sr I C. for this Particular Fauour to a worthy member. and for
that Respect & confidence he hath thereby expressed to their whole body
And they doe likewise vnanimously agree to admitt the said S I C. an Honora
ry fellow of this Society to haue the liberty of being present at their meetings -
when and as often as he pleaseth wthout being obleiged to any payments or -
other taskes & Sr. W Petty Dr. Wil. Dr Whist & mr. Gr. are hereby appointed to
attend Sr. I C. in the name of the S. and to represent to him wt a sense they haue of
his fauour. wch. they haue the more Reason to Value as being the first Donation
they haue been intrusted wth of this kind & wch. they hope will proue a Leading
Example to others.

ring the Refraction wch. coelestiall bodys suffer in the air. he was orderd to bring
in his scheme next Day. as also to take care that his quadrant be made ready for
Discouering a 2d minute by the sun or starrs - Zulichems Proportion of the Length of
a Pendule. as the distance of the center of the bullet from the point of suspension to the ra
dius of the bullet soe the Radius to a 3d - . . . two fifth of wch. added to the
first Length giues the true Length of a Pendule of any bigness. Zulichems-
obserue 9 1/2 Rindland inches make the Length of a half second pendule
