lettertext
Concerning Monsieur St Aldegonde it was thus sett downe in your L. letter.
His maner of dealing both by speeche to the king himself, as to Mareshal Biron, and other of the kinges councel, was to offer to the king the pro- tection of that contrey: with suche conditions as hir Majestie (for their good only) hath to her infinit charge defended them: which the K. not only re- fused, but hath acquainted hir Majestie therewith, and with his refusal.
Monsieur St Aldegonde is reputed heere of the greater part to be Ardelio & polypragmon, and therfore they make it but a mater in him of la- vishenes of speeche, and respect it no otherwise. Nevertheles I will not faile, as occasion shall be ministred, to salve the mater by degrees. I have already signified to some principal persons, and I will doe the like unto others, where it shall falle out fitly, that because I doe heare, he doth offer by his letters to purge himself unto her Majestie I hope it will prove but a Malentendu.
