May it please your good L. sins I sent yow my last the 11 of this moneth, there is a Ger- man come hither, under coulor of other buisnes: but hath brought certaine letters of credence from D. Cassimire, of which one is addressed to Leoninus the Chauncelor of Guelderland, and one among us in the Councel of state, an other to Barne- velt, and a third to Cant the bourghmaster of Amsterdame. That whiche the messenger doth deliver by vertue of his credence, is the advise of Cassimire to the forsaid parties, that in any wise they should persuade with this people, to walke very warely in returning an ans- wear to the Emperors Ambassadors, Not to reject them over peremptorily, nor yet to em- brace their motions, but so to qualifie their answear, as both they may seeme desirous of peace, and yet to trust to no treaty that if is offered by the Spaniard. That besides they should urge the Treaty between her Majestie and this contrey, and the neere con- junction of their cause with the present state of France: for which they may request of the Emperor to procure a cessation of armes of all handes, and in all places, and that then they could be willing, to come to any treaty, that shall tend to a publicke peace. This message of the Duke is but a preparative to a further letter, which, as the party doth report, he is resolved to send hither to the General states. fol.205v
For as it seemeth he is hardly pressed by the Emperor, to concurre in the furtherance of this action with him, and yet his privat affection to the state of these contreis doth move him to be carefull, that they should not be entrapped. Because his other letter to the states in general is expected every day, there is no answear yet resol- ved to be given to this messenger. How- beit esteeming that your L. woul be wil- lingly informed, howe every thing doth passe by the Spaniardes procurement, I thought it also requisit to signifie of this writing of Cassimire hither.
