that the 12 of this present at night, there came out of the fort of Cnossenbourgh two souldiers whiche passing many dangers throughe the watche of the Enemie, founde suche meanes at the length by bor- des, boates, and swimming, as they came unto us [In margin: 13 Julij]
yesterday to Arnham, assuring us from the Gover- nor of the Fort, that they would all of them die in defense of the place, requiring the souldiers to cause certaine fires to be made in the towne of Arnham, and certaine artillerie to be shotte, that assoone as they arrived, those of Cnossenbourgh might knowe that our forces were heere, which they knewe not assu- redly, and that we intended to rescue the fort. Heerupon the tokens were given, and yesternight there went fourth Count Maurice, the Count of Holmes, Sir Francis Vere, and other commaunders with intention to approche the Enemies campe, and to see therupon what advantage would be offered. They had with them 5 cornets of horse, and 6 enseignes of footemen The footemen were placed in an ambusche in the middeway: but our horsemen advanced to the trenches of the Enemie. Wherupon the Alarme being given there issued fourth of their trenches sundrie cornets, from whome our horsemen seemed to flie, till suche time as the Enemie was passed the ambushe, and then turning bridle, with the service of the foote- men defeated 3 Cornets at the lest, and tooke the most of the horsmen prisoners, and also their col- lours, which I have seene my self, to witte of the Cor- net of the D. of Parmaes owne gard, of the Mar- quis of Guasto, and of Hieronymo Caraffa. This I write unto your L. with some hast, before our men are all returned, because I finde a present messenger, not having the leasure to en- quire, or to write any more then this. For some bring us newes, that there are 5 cornets defeated. One Captain Edmond a scottishe gentleman, hath brought in for himself a 100 horse. And thus I take my humble leave. From Arnham.
